I never understood the need by fans to "cage" characters, so to speak, by confining them to a set type. Sure, Hitagi may have some Tsundere features, but she is not an archetypal tsundere. She is a genre in and of herself, and a rather unique one at that. Her dialogue and interactions with Araragi are playful with a hint of inauthenticity. She can be frank and candid but is also good at hiding her emotions. Her development throughout the series is slow and subtle, but also surprisingly well-handled, thanks to a great writer and an excellent VA. The question we should ask is not "what kind of character is Hitagi?" but "what characteristics make Hitagi Hitagi?"
