To be fair, Kirino never asked him to do such outrageous things in order to save the day...that's all on him. The guy really needs to learn to think on his feet, since this is clearly a trend.

Yep. Hopefully we learn more about the origin\cause of their estranged relationship. Apparently it has to do with him simply not being acting the "big brother" role when the opportunity came. What's interesting is that Kirino mentioning it was what made him feel guilty enough to decide to help out. I'm guessing the sister's "guilt moment" will result in an equivalent exchange; her having to sacrifice something, like putting her own reputation on the line as well.
