You'd think so, yet I've seen that happen plenty of times in anime. People in Saint Seiya Omega are currently trying to take down the main character precisely because he's killed a god. Some people would go to any length to gain fame. People going after Accelerator now are already completely out of his league, they wouldn't care get if he got so strong he couldn't even be called level 5 anymore. All that matters to them is that he's at the top.

There is no generally accepted pattern of human behavior. It's just your point of view and your concept of psychology. It is unlikely that many would have found another way to his place. And the others are unlikely to find a better way.
