Spoiler for Delving deeper...:
Having gone through all of Macross Frontier (and am going to start on the entirety of SDFM tomorrow, partly out of tribute to the late Noburo Ishiguro), as expected there's a lot of motifs derived from that saga, such as:
* Yuka Ichijo... her family name a total shoutout to Hikaru Ichijo!
* sea of CG lightsticks, as seen in the Nyan-Nyan Music Video Clip
* Yuko's gesture mirroring that of Ranka's signature "KIRA!"
* holographic stage dresses
* enemy mechs resembling Zentraedi-built Quedluun-Rau power suits
* the classic Itano Circus (yes, that unmistakable missile swarm, Ichiro Itano's signature); the missiles are tipped with pop-open nets, and marked with the "NO IDOL" decal
* AKB's combat machines (called Guardian Angels) look like VFs in Gerwalk mode, armed with machine guns and a weapon that immobilizes enemy fighters
The funny surprises include:
* Takamina's (Ryoko Shiraishi) hair bow and Kojiharu's (Mamiko Noto) wand functions as tasers.
* the captain of the mothership (and the mysterious older woman in glasses seen in earlier CMs) is none other than Mariko Shinoda, one of the "Godly Seven" and at 26 the oldest serving member in the troupe.
Orine Aida (Sayaka Nakaya, Team A) seems to be the girl with grimmest backstory, as it turns out she's an orphan (her father presumably killed in an accident while working the mines, then later her mother dies of disease) and being out of school had to eke out a living in a machine shop (interestingly her phone is shaped like a rice cake).
Nagisa Motomiya (Karen Iwata, Team 4), on the other hand, seems to be comparatively well-off, but then her father doesn't approve of her aspirations (as it is considered anti-government and subversive to be an idol) and her mother tries to reassure her... But she decides otherwise to run away.
Yuka Ichijo (Amina Sato, Team B), had an argument with a boyfriend and slapped him down, before it seems that she decided to get out of town and try her luck by aspiring to become an idol (as earlier she had submitted her audition video and got approved).
As to why Chieri Sono (Mayu Watanabe, Team B Center) doesn't appear in the latter half of the episode, it's because she's a daughter of an owner of a large conglomerate, and as such her family probably moved out to Akibastar (the girls' ultimate destination).
