Wild theory. Hashirama knows of Tobirama's Edo Tensei technique and decides to sacrifice himself to revive Izuna. Madara agrees with this and they form Konoha.
But then something along the way either prevents or delays Hashirama's self-sacrifice and Madara thinks Hashirama was just lying and goes Kyuubi on him.
