It is in no way "new", but Now and then, here and there (Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku) is a great series in my opinion; it's about kids and war. I don't really know if it qualifies as "dark" as there are some funny/silly moments, but it sure has some depressing/disturbing moments also.
The art style might be a little more on the childish/light side, but the story really isn't. If you haven't seen it yet, I'd suggest giving it a try.
