And no, I have partly to disagree. If the poll will be a multiple choice, main characters don't have to be in top. They will be closer to the top but there can be an exceotion.
Just take a "Fave female character" poll from Naruto. The winning character is a side character who wasn't in picture for several years in anime. But the main one is only on 3rd spot.
I usually dislike main characters although in FMA case I do like all cast.
And don't even get me started about Hitsugaya from Bleach who owns all main cast in popularity x_x
So there are exceptions
