For the record, in the Laxus arc of the manga Mystogan mentioned that Gildartz was obviously the strongest person in the guild so the whole fight to prove the strongest in Fairy Tail was meaningless, but Laxus thought that he'd been gone so long that he didn't count anymore.
Also, I think Makarov alone could've utterly destroyed Phantom Lord if he hadn't been hit with a sneak attack in the beginning. Fairy Law.
