Making a middle ground is fitting for Gargantia : it's true that this is not a colorful adventure show with shounen-tier plot, but I really hope Gen try to do something refreshing by not making it too grimdark either. A few important character deaths is acceptable, and I'd imagine the relationship between Gen and people's expectations to be slightly different than his previous works, so that the viewers will get a good grasp that Gen's diverse range of genres are more than just than a sea of darkness. From what I gathered in the interview, when he said "I made it a little bit different from my previous works" I really hope he wasn't joking like he said in Madoka, and I hope I'm right once shit hits the fan (= when the story gets darker) during the show's airing.

BTW, is it just me, or did the show have strange ImaBoku vibes when I foresee the show's direction ?
