At the moment, there is no cheap way to buy anything Yamato 2199. Amazon.co.jp seems to have at least somewhat lesser prices as they have discounts (Off by 20% or more) and buying all at once would reduce the shipping cost significantly. I've seen the price of a single Blu-ray as low as $58 US Dollars before shipping.
Ebay tends to be rather high as it takes retail prices and shipping cost from Japan into account for the seller.
The older, cheaper model kits tended to be box size and were rarely in scale with each other. Most were about six inches long if I recall.
The Yamato 2199 models are (mostly) 1/1000 scale and a lot of them are longer than six inches long. Yamato in 1/1000 scale is 13 inches long and the larger Gamilas carriers and battleships are in the 13 to 16 inch range with the super battleships projected at being 25 and 29 inches respectively.
The smaller models tend to come with more than one ship, and so far all the model kits have come with extra stuff (fighter planes, tanks, reflex satelites, other kinds of ships).
There is also a line of 1/72 scale fighters and a new 1/500 scale Yamato that will be 26 inches long.
