All three shots at least partially obscure the face—particularly the eyes. It's a common technique used when someone is reminiscing about someone who is no longer present (ie: has "disappeared"). It's usually used to subconsciously suggest that memories are fading, but I'll leave it to the novel readers to decide whether its use in this case is overexaggerated or fitting.
