gino SAVED zero-r and in fact all of the final arc of code geass
it was forbidden for anyone to die during the final battle
the entire point of the last arc was the need to allow lelouch to behave like a complete monster and still come out as sympathtic in the end for his sacrifice
thats why there wasnt a single named character who died during the final battle (aside from diethard, but no one cares about him, becouse the ass-hole was a smug snake with chronic backstabbing disorder)
not even shinzel died in the end, and he was planing to nuke the world into behaving themselves
thats the only reason you can sell lelouch as sympathetic in the end
becouse despite of all the shit he did, he didnt actually kill any sympathetic characters with his actions
kill off kallen, and he becomes much less sympathetic (the entire battle after all is his own doing)
not just kallen either
nunnaly, kaguya, xing-ke, tianxi
the death of any character who wasnt directly involved in his betrayal in ep 19 would make him out as an ass-hole protagonist villain
hence, by saving kallen, gino allowed lelouch to be viewed as a sympathetic ass-hole protagonist and not just an ass-hole protagonist
