If we are talking about the PC version, and if I remember correctly, at the first time the map appears, you have to go to hunt crabs with everyone on the beach, followed by the "*something* plains" (it's possible you have to go back to town once more before that).
There used to be a huge " ! " over the icon of those areas, where the plot would advance (it's advantageous to beef up a few level before visiting them though, but that of course depends on the choosen difficulty).
