They had the advantage of being five feet away, not trapped in a bay behind a giant wall, behind rows and rows of troops shooting at an elevated target who is likely so far away that you'd need a sniper to hit him. Context is important.

Again, giant wall, rows of troops, elevated platform, extreme distance. There's a reason no one tried to stop him in the manga. They couldn't. Whitebeard's quake powers aren't a beam, so all he could do is shake the field up, and that takes time to do.
