I'm all about buying R1 DVD's, even when I have fansubs sitting on the hard drive, but this just feels like price-gouging to me.

You probably don't have to worry! This is not really costing them anything because they actually are not paying for a license. Any extra sales they get is just gravy for them. If they sell at least 1000 unit for each volume they will make about the same amount they could have sold the show at $10000 per episode. $10000 per episode is a very cheap license now days.
