if my nerd side for power armor is correct...
the carapace only protects the most hit areas. should the shield fail or is breached, the armor, combined with the carapace, will instantly repair the damaged tissue, replacing it with a black patch were the wound was, like warhammer's space marines. other side is that so that the armor will fit and move smoothly when operating.
