I read on MW they are ethereal bodies. This is a subtle retcon, because this kind of visual effects were already present from the start.
Overall it makes sense though that the body trails the soul.
Also, the holographic cockpit makes it seem like Brera doesn't have soul, but maybe he could be different because he is a cyborg.
