Admittedly, I haven't checked out too many recent anime - but the one that came closest to the "old-school" moe style was Karada from Asatte no Houkou. Cute, young, and capable yet so vulnerable and complex... a great character who could have carried the show on her own, given the right plot.
And yes, I realize I'm being a bit unfair - comparing contemporary anime to adaptations of literary classics by the legends in the industry.
P.S. Oh, yes, I forgot about Anne Shirley, from Anne of Green Gables - another great series (and book). Arguably one of Takahata's best works.
