The second chapter "catches up" with the first episode of the TV series, including Sheryl flying with Alto at her first concert on Frontier, but then includes a lot of scenes directly in conflict with the show, such as Ranka singing "Aimo" at the Miss Macross Contest. Now maybe this is movie continuity...I'm not sure, since I haven't seen the movie, but it ain't nothin' like the TV series.

Yep, as I said before, the manga must be movie continuity. If it isn't even that, well, that kinda would rob it of significance.
