Grimdark isn't even a genre. It refers to tone, and I can't imagine a KyoAni show being like that. It doesn't FIT them.

With a couple of exceptions, almost every single story in the novels is centered around those supernatural elements. You're downplaying their importance.
The activities of the SOS Brigade are definitely not 'everyday'.
