Actually given how Itachi despised the members of his clan in the end it was a rather big compliment for Kakashi, I think that even among the Uchiha there wasn't many ninja who were as strong or at the same level as Kakashi.

And if it's true that Itachi seems really good in Taijutsu and speed as well, I wouldn't say yet that he's on the level of Gai yet.

It's always difficult to judge the difference of speed between two characters when they didn't fight each other and it's even more difficult in the case of Itachi because we really didn't see him much.

But in the end if Kakashi can deal with Gai's speed, so does Itachi even if we don't know the extent of his Taijutsu abilities.
