To be honest, I was bored to the point of distraction for most of the first episode. I went into the series with high expectations (Sunrise + Mecha = Win) so I was disappointed by the clumsy attempt at illiciting an emotional response from the audience. It just didn't work for me.
And yes, I know the first episode of any mecha series is probably going to feature the main character somehow being forced/coerced/tricked into piloting the giant suit that he has no interest in piloting. That's par for the course. I've just never been able to buy into shallow tricks like these. You can tell me all you want that I'm supposed to care about a character who has ~10 minutes screen time, but it's just not going to happen.
What I did like was the methodical actions of the silver-haired antagonist. The way he handled the protagonist was marvelous.
