Well, at the beginning, it's the standard
Spoiler for Tsukune's development throughout the series:
'lead-male-can't-fend-for-himself-and-needs-chick-to-get-out-of-trouble' routine but from volume 3 and onwards, as he gets bitten by Moka and momentarily gains the power of a vampire, he starts kicking ass on his own, but it doesn't last long...just the time needed for a 'finishing move' or something like that. At first Tsukune doesn't remember anything but as he learns the truth (that part will lead to some tension between him and Moka as he can't believe he was made into a monster, even for a short while) he will see that he's not that hopeless, although he still needs to have the crap beaten out of him to have Moka (without her rosario) to bite him and 'activate' his vampire powers. And that only happens when she is too tired to fight or she needs extra firepower.
It sort of changes midseries as there is some vampire residue left in Tsukune (he starts craving for blood at one time...once again leading to some short-lasting stress between him and his friends) and soon enough, he can activate that vampire mode all by himself or at least subconsciously (vol.05)...although it leads to a quite dangerous development (vol.06) where his powers go berserk and turn him into a bloodthirsty ghoul (when I mean, 'bloodthirsty', he doesn't suck blood but he beats the crap of anything standing nearby...friend or foe). That's when that mysterious sister (possibly an exorcist) has to put him under control by giving him his own rosario...like Moka.
From there on, he can revert to his ghoul/vampire state by removing the ornament, imparting him, for a couple of minutes, with the same powers as Moka.
Hope this helped.
