Servants are smart. Well, most of them anyway. Servants are fully capable of fighting on their own if they need to, and need not have their master by their side. Lancer is proof of this. However, since (( most )) Masters are no slouch themselves, a good teamwork between a Master and a Servant is vital against stronger enemies.

That's not quite true. Lancer's still very strong. Had Saber not been wearing armour along with having a decent luck status, even powered-up Saber would've gotten her heart stabbed, since Gae Bolg is a sure hit technique that can be avoided by LUCK ONLY. The game did mention that Archer for some reason, hesitated when Saber suddenly appeared and couldn't manage to blow her sudden attack. Had Archer not hesitated, Archer could've blocked Saber's attack. But that doesn't mean he can beat her in close combat. Archer was never that good with close combat in the first place.
