it's true the scenario is a fresh breath, but some parts of the original story are really missing, especially for Asuna, Konoka and Setsuna

Spoiler for MAJOR, don't read it until you have read at least the 5-6th volume:

their personnal power comes from the contract and isn't innate (for the moment). with that point, they are just butchering a bit their background :
-asuna : there is almost no more possibility to connect her with the Mahou part of the world of negima (her relationship with takahata was greatly toned down, she doesn't have a shady background along with her innate magic cancelling ability, so connecting her with thousand master will be hard)
-Konoka : well... without the kyoto arc, she simply lost her "mage inheritance"
-Setsuna : it's sad that their current relationship is simply "true friends" with romantic contrast (the fact she is protecting konoka openly right from the start changes the perspective)

and because of the contract, her "wings" are now considered as part of the contract, which removes some depth of setsuna true personality (the choice of her duty, the distance between her and konoka, etc)

About Asuna, though, in the spring OVA, didn't she activate her own pactio and invoke her fan? I've been assuming that was a screw up, but maybe it's a hint that they'll be able to invoke their own pactio's later? We can hope, anyways.
