So after watching 5 episodes of hearing people commenting that Kirino is such a selfish person/bitch.. I finally came in agreement with that statement.. What's with her hitting Kyousuke after kicking his crotch? Seriously, I feel bad for him but he kinda of deserved it too for helping her lol. Also the way she show her pissed off face to get Kyousuke to solve whatever problem at hand..
Well despite what I've said, I still like Kirino.. just need to wait for that moment where she really, like really shows her appreciation to Kyousuke for what he had sacrificed.. (his image lol) Oh ya.. about the content of episode 5.. it felt about exaggerated but still was within acceptable range beside the Otaku-Best Friend portion wtf? IMO. Ayase was such a scary being with that.. face distortion and with her love for Kirino *yuri goggles* P.S. Who would've guess that their Dad is a Tsundere |

Enjoyable episode, mostly thanks to the lulz for me. I can see where all the drama comes from, and I can get where Ayase is coming from. I wouldn't say Ayase is crazy or anything, just a bit intense and/or mis-informed. Their "best friends" concept feels pretty superficial though, but that's pretty run of the mill at that age.
Honestly though, Kyousuke doesn't deserve the flak he's getting. Hopefully that wonderful bastion of sunshine known as Manami gives him some much needed relief. She didn't even show up this episode . If by some freak accident she starts to believe Kyousuke is a sis-con, I may become incapable of watching this show.... |

It is all a tsundere family. Noted by watching eps 1-5. XD
Well except the mother...I have yet to see it. =S (My note: Taking the blame of the ugly things does not always solve the problem like in the last 5 eps...I hope I can see this in the future. For now 9/10)

Excellent comedy, cheesy drama.
I'm starting to get the sense that this is like one of the family-oriented sitcoms of the 90s (Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Family Matters, Home Improvement, etc...). It tackles a serious social or moral issue (as those sitcoms frequently did), but does so against the backdrop of overarching comedy and satire, with more than a touch of absurdness all around. The over-the-top verbal and physical confrontations, the humorously absurd solutions that are frequently used, the considerably hammy characters, the slapstick comedy, the family and friendship dynamics and quarrels that are at play... it all feels very sitcom-esque to me. As light comedic entertainment, it works fairly well. It makes the drama a little less impactful though (at least for me). That being said, I think Kirino did a good job of conveying her sisterly pain in this episode. She clearly was hurt pretty badly, slowly over time, by her perception that her brother was just flatout ignoring her constantly. I guess that in her mind he has an awful lot to make up for. She's not likable, not yet, but at least I see where her anger and resentment comes from. I don't actively dislike her, as such.

I have to agree with the people who thought the whole deal was a bit too exaggerated, the first scene in particular: the dramatic rain, the yelling, the crazy faces (huge Higurashi vibes during that part indeed). All of this made it very hard for me to take it seriously.
Thankfully, the rest of the episode was better. While Ayase seemed like a hysterical bitch in the first part, the second part of the episode made it clear she was just genuinely worried for Kirino and profoundly misguided. It's not hard to understand why, considering how demonized otakus are in Japanese society. During his pleading, I wish Kyousuke had at least mentioned that murderers have been (or pretended to be) inspired by all kinds of works in the past: books, songs, movies, etc... Should they all be forbidden? Of course not. Ayase's reaction to Kirino's rant was kind of funny. I don't know about you, but it wouldn't make me THAT happy to be put on the same level as eroge Daddy's tsundere moment was also hilarious. And count me in as one of the people irritated by Kirino's attitude. That's the very first time I've liked the brother more than the sister in an anime. I feel for Kyousuke... even my own sister isn't such a bitch.

Okay, despite things being obviously rushed, at least things can still be followed and I quite like the episode. A good reason came from the male members of the Kousaka family being awesome as usual. Kyousuke is being a great big brother again, with him confronting Kirino to force her to face her issue with Ayase, even Kirino has to admit that he’s being a good big brother. He also doesn’t forget to call Saori (seriously, Manami, you have next episode to keep yourself in the running so that I won’t be a full blown Kyousuke/Saori shipper) to make sure that they understand that Kirino is being her tsundere self as usual. Also, he did one thing I very rarely see in anime: when facing a problem, he asked for advice from his parents, a reasonable authority figure. Granted, most of the time the parents in anime are either dead, missing or just living away, but still.
Speaking of his Dad, he won points for me that unlike Ayase’s family and many other parents in real life, he doesn’t get influenced solely by what he heard from mass media and second hand info/gossip, but go out of his way to get the info himself. If only more parents can do this… But the focus of the episode is obviously Ayase. To contribute to the debate over her, I have a slightly different view. Personally, I don’t find her all that unreasonable at first; it’s still loli porn, after all, and I won’t fault her for not wanting her best friend to be involved in that. Sure, her exaggerated reaction allows me to gloat that my prediction are correct that she’s a yuri with yandere tendencies, but I won’t say that’s perfectly accurate, really. That may be part of the underlying reason, of course, but I feel that the issue runs deeper than that. Spoiler for Ayase:
Still, the last 4 minutes kinda ruined the episode for me. First of all, I don’t like Ayase being a hypocrite there; just before, she gives Kirino an ultimatum to choose between her and otaku, but when the tables are turned she herself aren’t ready to make the choice between friendship with Kirino and her hatred for those things. Really, I don’t expect her to right away being OK with otaku and Kirino being one, but that conflict is one she has to struggle with herself. I fully agree with Kyousuke, “what are you looking at me for?” because really, even then he already went out of his way to patch up her sister’s relationship with her best friend, what’s more is he supposed to do? And afterward, he sacrificed himself, again, to save her sister. I mean, sure, it’s more honourable than to sacrifice other innocents, but dude really got to find new, better strategies than that. Really, I’m glad that it’s Manami episode next week, it’s great that we got at least someone who will sing for our unsung hero. The thing that could really save the episode is the one word in the Ayase’s text: Lying. I mean really, not just her but the father has to realize that such outrageous behaviour has to be faked, right? And yet they still accept it, maybe because the shock of the major shift in their image of Kirino of perfect girl to loli-loving otaku in reality is just too much. Therefore, it’ll really help them to have Kyousuke as a fall guy and blaming Kirino’s change for his influence, and being the lesser evil makes it easier to accept Kirino. Perhaps later, when they can truly accept Kirino’s otaku nature, they can stop pretending that it’s not due to Kirino’s own will, and then they can properly apologize for Kyousuke for setting him up as a scapegoat. That’s more for Ayase than Dad as he seems more accepting already, but I really hope that it’s true and will be confirmed in future episodes. P.S: Based on the description given by Zeroryoko, I guess I'm mixing up yandere and yangire, and yangire seems more appropriate in my text compared to yandere. Still too lazy to find and replace though, sorry.

Excellent episode. I really do like how they're tackling the image issue anime otaku have and how people have been misled about them and their hobby by the media at several levels. Kyousuke could stand to find some tactics that don't make him out to be a raging pervert, but at least Ayase is plenty perceptive enough to realize he was lying there at the end. Keikaku doori indeed. 9/10 for me.
Looks like Manami finally gets some screen time again next episode. Though I can't help but wonder how Kirino's issues will interfere with any progress between Kyousuke and Neighbor-girl.

Again, seen from her point of view, she's making perfect sense. And we HAVE seen foreshadowing before - when Ayase first sighed about Kirino being cold to her after she was turned down on a date offer, and later when Ayase asked her if she was hiding a BF from her, based on seeing her diss people on the phone while showing signs of happiness. Japanese society is historically quite intolerant of the 'different' ... which is really bizarre if you watch the absurd fads the 'mainstream' latches onto there.

Also, I don't call that such kind of events as foreshadowing to the problem at hand. These prove she is indeed quite close to Kirino, but that arguably doesn't hint she is literally clinging and adoring her. The proof is almost no one expected such reaction, nothing that close (in fact, people were expecting her to have some aversion but a compromise later on). Quote:
That's why I said everyone has a secret or two, it isn't like you should sniff in people's business like that, right in the public while it is very awkward, regardless the subject. Moreso considering Japanese culture: it is hardly believable to have such argument unleashed in public. Just to remind you: I never said Ayase doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I just do not feel much sympathy for her pushy tendencies, forcing Kirino to follow her way (regardless if her reasons are good or not). The fact a character is complex doesn't always make them more likable, it depends of opinion and it just rubs me on the wrong way (and I did mention she has potential to have better side to be shown, although right now, I'm not expecting a lot from her).

Ayase is no hypocrite here. The point is that Kyousuke was turning things around: Now Kirino isn't the driving otaku force behind everything anymore. Instead, it's Kyousuke who tainted Kirino with his otaku ideas (something which relates to Ayase's earlier suspicion of "Give me back my pure Kirino"), and this makes Kirino a VICTIM of his otaku abuse and siscon fantasies. Now it's Kyousuke's perverted attempt to get into his sister's pants who's the enemy, and Kirino needs to be protected from Kyousuke's influence. THIS is why she decided to immediately reconcile with Kirino, to be closer to her in order to SHIELD her from Beelzebub Kyousuke. |
