I think I will vote Air, too, this is THE must of Drama/Romance. The beach scene in episode 11...

Saikano by far. Especially episodes 9 and 13 are devastating. After finishing it I felt depressed for days.

I still need to watch Kimi Ga though. The end of the second season of Marimite really moved me too. Another favorite of many, Beyond the Clouds, in my opinion was destoyed by it's ridiculous ending. Didn't like it. Red Garden was good, though it went a little to far in trying to be sad a few times. I actually laughed hysterically about a few things that were meant to be sad.

I'd probably still go with Chrono Crusade. While admittingly the only real sad part was the ending it was still pretty sad and left me a bit out of it for a day or so afterwards.

Seconded Saikano yet again, especially episode 9. That is saddest moment in anime for me, period. KimiNozo has sad moments, but those moments don't depress you but rather shocks you.

For me it would be the beach scene in AIR and the Makoto arc in Kanon

Grave of the Fireflies, Now and Then Here and There, and Saishuu Heiki Kanojo were all ruthless tearjerkers. I suppose NaTHaT could be considered the lightest since it had what could technically be called a "happy" ending.

Also, special mention goes to Narutaru, which isn't the same emotional trip as the afore-mentioned shows, but nevertheless left me feeling acutely depressed for quite a while after watching the finale (and I'm not talking about just a day or two here).

Agreed on this one. While not the saddest thing i have seen, it is certainly up there. This one episode OVA packs a very powerful punch. I think there were 2 times during the episode when i got misty-eyed. Coming from me that says a lot. Fafner series has its fair share of gloom and powerful scenes as well. It is surprisingly emotional for something that i classified as "yet another mecha show" in the beginning. Now it stands as my no1 mecha series, and the emotional impact it can deliver certainly helped it to get up there.

Space Runaway Ideon.
After all of that crap, the universe gets destroyed and Piper Lou's whiney arse doesn't get a death scene!

I didn't cry or anything, I felt a little sad. No other anime has probably made me sad, because the sh!t that happens is on an individual scale, rather than huge.

The two shows that come to mind are Kenshin Reflection and Grave of the Fireflies. I make sure the girlfriend has left the building when I watch these. I also had a hard time with Elfen Lied now that I think about it.

Saw these years ago ...

Grave of the Fireflies .. really choked me up
Fushigi Yuugi .. got really attached to the characters and there were definitely some sad scenes that moved me.

Can't remember anything relatively current that has made me sad .. maybe age has just hardened me.

Watch Ideon. If you thought anything else was sad, this might kill you, it's so good!
Inuyasha was sad, 'cos it took so damn long to end.
