does anyone know an easy way to change a file like avi to a mpeg, or such things.

i mean something fast and easy to download (easy = not illegal)

Perhaps you should try VirtualDub. It's freeware, so it fulfills your conditions.

VirtualDub doesn't create mpegs, does it? Try TMPGEnc. It's free for personal use and if I understand correctly, the mpeg2 part is not free, but you can still create mpeg1 files. I think it also has an evaluation period on the mpeg2.
