Horo's red eyes are very cool and it was so creepy when she howled!

I like the OP a lot but the ED has some of the goofiest Engrish yet.
She's a wolf, they're naked. It doesn't initially even occur to her there might be an issue.

He's a) a bit older and not so easily distracted b) but still a guy and he does find her attractive c) she definitely notices his occasional admiration

Putting on clothes afterward will just leave her initial impression etched in his head..... poor doomed Lawrence

Oye! Thanks for the placement of the accent, Kaoru. High-class prostitute or enhanced escort service? They were a bit of both (or rather, very expensive courtesans/mistresses often as trained in the arts as the geisha). The wiki notes that Josh Whedon was thinking of the oiran class when he created the Companion Caste for the series Firefly. Whatever, nice choice though for a fertility/harvest goddess. heh...

Hey man, doesn't matter to me, just letting you know you might be missing some background detail. Don't worry about it, if you like dark screens.

I want to know what happened between that scene and her getting dressed in his cart the next morning. D:

Wow nice chunk of pages for one episode...

Well from just the first episode I can easily say im hooked. I'm not really sure its proper to say the show felt "Down to earth" considering its mainly about a fox god, but thats the sentiment im going with.

I have no clue if the shows going to remain as grounded as it is now, but I sure hope it does. High fantasy is all well and good, but some of the low key variety is quite a surprise to find.

Good point . I suppose it will be one of those mysteries that is simply speculated upon.

Or doujins made.

Anyhow, two facepalm caps from the episode and three quick caps from the OP, because they flash past so quickly:

Now that I think about it, what we see of the interplay between the old pagan rites and the new "one true religion" reminds me of the dichotomy between the pagan religion and Christianity in the 1973 version of The Wicker Man. While there's obvious differences between the two works, the way the old and the new don't mesh very well feels very similar, and it adds a nice touch of flavor to Spice and Wolf. I also suspect that this will play a larger role in the overall story.

Another nice thing about the show is the way it depicts the setting. It's a world with lots of texture; where the people seem to move about with purpose rather than simply serving as a backdrop for the plot. It's a very nice touch, and it puts Spice and Wolf into the same kind of territory as Emma, Seirei no Moribito and Twelve Kingdoms.

I liked the way the guard was really baffled by the concepts of trading salt-fur-wheat-etc

The guard seemed baffled at the idea of trading in general, to my eyes. Sort of a "Wait, you drive around the country selling or bartering stuff to people in small towns, never settling down anywhere? What sort of idiot are you?" kind of reaction.

It is interesting that all the things Lawrence mentions trading are all the sort of things a wagon-bound trader would likely carry: salt is a general purpose preservative and seasoning, doesn't go bad no matter how long you keep it, and it always in demand in this level of society. Furs are common trading stock, useful for clothing, and depending on their quality they can be worth a decent amount of money. Also non-perishable, when properly treated. And wheat, probably his weakest trade item, but as a special type that can endure both warm and cold temperatures it's worth having. So long as it's kept out of the weather, it can likely last quite some time as well.

That just came to mind looking at the picture of Horo pointing out the apples to him. I don't think any sort of non-dried fruit would be that good of a trading stock for him, simply because they would go bad in a relatively short time. Apples are probably better for that than some fruit, but still not the sort of thing a slow-moving trader would probably want to carry.

(if anyone has any corrections to what I said, feel free to speak up... I was just posting things I "know" which means they're really just things I THINK I know... The posibility of me being wrong does exist.)

True enough that the guard probably wasn't too well versed in trading period. Considering he probably grew up in that city and eventually became a guard that kind of lifestyle would be pretty foreign to him. Like the idea of a village not believing in his one god. Though if he is a guard you'd think he'd run into traders now and then.

Agree pretty much with the views on the trading items we've seen Lawrence work with so far. Salt should certainly be a valuable item for that period for is preservative use and always nice as a seasoning. Seems like Lawrence was using his head with variety of goods that wouldn't go bad on him along the way.

On the apple side, probably would only be a good trade item if it was for a short trip from where he got them to drop off location. Uncertain on what good ways to help them last longer. Yeah actually did check it out and seems they'd only stay good for a week. So would probably need to be a really short trip for trading to be good for them.

So certainly it seems like Lawrence is a solid merchant trading in things that make sense. Curious what kinds of items we'll see him working with as the series moves along.

For long trips you'd have to go with dried apples. But apples can be picked a bit green and last for quite a while... definitely long enough to get from a small village to a "big city". That's where the whole farmers market idea derives from...though this series seems set in a time when the idea of long-range trading was still fairly rare in the region.

Carts move about 1-3mph. Allowing for stops and horse maintenance - that set a limit distance between villages of no more than about 20 miles apart. Far enough that most people never left their village except for perhaps a Big Festival in the area... or that some of the farmers would co-op a cart transport to sell good "in the city" nearby (bigger village/town).

I'm a little cautious about this series. admittedly the first one was quite good, but the first episodes for a lot of shows come off well. I'm hoping that it will continue being good, and not plunge into god-awfulness like i'm somewhat expecting. i've also got a sinking feeling about how they are going to use chloe as a character. if it degenerates into harem angsting i'm not sure i'll be able to stick with it.

oh well, here's hoping...

Hmm thanks for the info. Figured there had to be some fruit trading in the past just wasn't sure how they pulled it off . But sending them off before they are ripe would make sense. After all want to get them where they are going, and sold off well before any worry about going bad comes into play.

I definitely know what you mean. If we find out that Chloe "followed" them or something lame like that, I might just drop the series outright. The story is supposed to be about them as a duo.
Constant third-party interference = do not want. I'll feel much more comfortable if we don't see Chloe at all, at least for 2-3 more episodes.

I'm hoping they use Chloe as more of a focus point for events in the district they've left (since otherwise it would feel a bit documentary-ish and assuming that Chloe is the assertive negotiating type she's been hyped as... someone to force exposition and whatnot). I can think of several ways for Chloe to move the offstage story forward and then later be involved either helping or hindering their journey. I have some speculation but I'll just wait and see.
For an anime-only character, they've created quite an interesting little thing in Chloe so I hope they play her well.

But yes... I *want* to see a series that mostly focuses on Horo and Lawrence's relationship, ambling along the roads, having small encounters in the towns and just getting to know each other. I really don't want a "crisis of the week" series as what I've seen of the source material just doesn't play that way. If there's a crisis, let it build slowly in the background and when it comes -- it'll be really important and that's when Chloe might have a part to play (for good or ill).
