BT and internet?

It seems like everytime I start BT (BitTorrent, the original), my internet (cable - Optimum Online) disconnects. But when I quit BT, internet starts working again.
Any ideas what's happening? And how to fix this?

There are a number of possibilities, but I believe that people who have had a similar problem to yours ended up having a conflict with their firewall. Are you using ZoneAlarm, by any chance?

If you're using ZoneAlarm, I believe there's a thread detailing the issue and any possible fixes. If no fix is available, you may need to change firewall vendors. If you're not using ZoneAlarm, you can still verify if your firewall is the problem by disabling your firewall (or even exiting it entirely), running BitTorrent, and seeing if you still have the same behavior. If your internet connection is fine, then the issue is your firewall. We can either recommend a replacement, or we can work with you to see if there aren't some settings that can be used to make it all work nicely.

If the issue isn't the firewall, then please let us know:
1) What operating system you're using
2) What BitTorrent client you're using
3) What firewall(s) you're using
4) Approximately how old your computer is, and how you're connecting to the internet (ethernet cable, USB?)
5) What the model of your cable modem is
6) If you have a router in your network, what the router model is (your cable modem may be a modem/router combination)

Reinstalled it, and looks like it works now.
But thanks for your suggestions anyways!
