Is there a way to see whic program/process is accessing the HD?

I dunno the frequency that this happens but it's annoying hearing the sound of the HD when I am not doing anything. 1st of all it happens on my DL drive. Since it's a DL drive it's has tons of files and fragmented. Yes yes... I won't defrag it. Maybe some program need to scan it but since it has a bunch of files and is fragmented it takes a lot of time compared with the other drives so I only hear the noise of this one. Still I wanna know what process or program is accessing it and see if I can turn off that access.

BTW, I am talking about winxp sp2.

It's probably some Windows background service doing nothing much useful. Disable anything you have no real need for.

There's a bunch of apps in the sysinternals suite, such as filemon, procmon, diskmon etc that will help you find out what's accessing your disk.

This post won't be very helpful, but...

Spoiler for Large Screenshot:
...that's one of the main things I like about Vista...

But the problem is in winxp not vista .

Anyway. I hate turning standard services unless I must. Last time I did I couldn't access a function and didn't know why and it took me a while that a service that I turned off was necessary. Wasted a lot of my time.

Now I just need a method to trace disk access.
