That similarity was brought up in a blog too, particularly in this comment by Martin.

Now to get my hands on that movie...

It's more euphemism more than anything else. Yakuza hitmen can be called 'dispute mediators' as much as janitors are sometimes called custodians, and garbage (wo)men are called sanitation engineers. Or more extremely, prostitutes are sometimes called to be escorts as well.

So yeah, in cases where their actual title is less offensive than the actual job they do, I'd say it's safer to assume it's merely a euphemism rather than them trying to redefine such a term. Especially when their actual title is not exactly entirely accurate of the 'dirty' deeds they do.

The Leon comparison is quite apt, despite the slightly different themes and the obvious age difference in the respective casts. Coincidentally, I was thinking that if Takeshi Kitano made an anime, it might turn out similar to Kure-nai. His later movies share some of Kure-nai's gaudy style, humanisitic grit and witty humour.

LOL, the line that did it for me this episode is...

Spoiler for episode 5:

Chizuru surprised me... I guess I'm too used to active children... Both in fiction and real life...

Naw...she is common.

I say that my sister is also like that around strangers (but once she gets to know them...).

That's the Direct translation.

Anyway, most of the people here would get it.

Also, I didn't expect Yuuno to be the one being regretful of the assassination arts. Which just further proves to me that Kurenai's fighting form isn't just some 'mediation' or innocuous, defensive martial art. It's something that is supposed to kill and hurt.

Can't blame her...this lesson is way to advanced for her

But I am really taking a liking to Yamie as well. She, at least, is the most sensible of the bunch and possess a strange, mature charm

I don't see his "art" as being defensive in the first place.

You know that he tries to settle things in a peaceful manner but in his mind, that is just an excuse the beat the crap out of everyone (or is left with no choice but to)

The power that he has is "twisted" in that sense.

Well, yeah.

There's no denying that the Hozuki art is meant to kill, after all, the entire package came with an elbow-blade.

Shinkurou is trying not to use it though.

I haven't commented much about this show here because the thread was a spoiler mine field for a while. This is certainly my favorite show of the current season, followed by Daughter of Twenty Faces. I was a bit concerned about whether the Hozuki arm business was going to take this show in an unreasonably fantastical direction, but episode five suggests a more plausible explanation. Still the scene where he blocked bullets seemed a bit outlandish (and why didn't the guy fire a sustained volley?).

Considering how long it appeared to take to travel of Yuuno's house, I'm a bit surprised she's at the same school as Shinkurou. Looked like she'd easily be commuting a couple of hours each day by train.

Kurenai reminds me of a certain character in Monster. In keeping with the new rules about spoilers I'll tag this reference:

Spoiler for Kurenai-like character in Monster and the train punks:

After Baccano! and Kurenai, I expect I'll always be on the lookout for any more shows by Brains Base. The gorgeous murals in Kurenai are so reminiscent of the ones in Toei's Mononoke.

My heart goes out to Yayoi. I hope she finds a way to join the party soon. As for her attitude about men, while she might be a lesbian, I think she's a heterosexual woman with a low opinion of the opposite sex. Look at her reaction to the seductive advertisement in the newspaper for example. I've also wondered about the constant traffic in couples that seems to take place at the apartments. Prostitution, perhaps? There's seems to be a repeated subtext about women who give themselves up to noncommittal men that recurs both in these scenes with Yayoi and in the wonderful dialog between Murasaki and Tamaki as they watched the soap opera together. It almost seems a metaphor for the Yuuno and Shinkurou pairing.

On other thing -- Am I the only one who thinks Kurenai looks remarkably feminine in the OP? The first couple of times I watched it I kept wondering who that girl at the beginning was. (It is Shinkurou, right?) I do like how this show plays at being a harem comedy when it's anything but.

Episode 5
Spoiler for Kurenai:

Otherwise, Kurenai continues to be pretty good. Though after reading some of the spoilers on this site, this can't continue for much longer. Very soon we'll probably be getting into the real horror of the evil Kouhoin family.

From what I've understood, the Kuhouins themselves aren't evil it's just that there are certain circumstances that cause everything that has happened/is happening, if anyone can prove me wrong then please do so.

It is not like keeping your bloodline pure is something rare. Well, it might be rare nowadays, but it was practiced all throughout periods of history by affluent people and royalty.

Brilliant feel good episode, IMO. Reminded me a lot of a similar relax and character bondnig episode from Red Garden (ep.8, IIRC). And Murasaki continue to be beyond adorable even when normally one should feel irritated by some her antics (like breaking the game).

I am curious what Ginko would think of Tamaki and Yamie visiting Shinkurou's room so often...

Nice to see I am not the only one who is reminded of that particular Monster character. Though we can't be certain yet how much control Shinkurou has when his fighting mode is on.
