Gurren Lagann fits the bill here. Considering you liked GTO, you'll find a similar GAR/badassness like you saw with Onizuka.

Katekyo hitman REBORN! - full of comedy and action, and the action gets very intense from episode 19 onwards. Main character.. um, I'd consider him 'cool' in my own sense, but there're plenty of other cool characters to balance it out.

May be slightly unfitting, but i really liked Eureka 7 (one of the few action animes i ever got into) the Lead isn't all the cool at first, but man at the end, Renton is a badass.

Try Slayers. I've watch some of the older versions and it was very funny with some action.
