Learning from the Consequences

I would like to know if there are series like Petshop of Horrors where people recieve goods, services, or the like that could have horrible consequences for the recipient and there's some sort of lesson that can be learned from it.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I already know of Franken Fran.

xXxHolic is a very worthy choice. It takes an episode or so for character introduction and then gets right into things. I'd also suggest the 4-episode OVA Vampire Princess Miyu which is much much darker.

Jigoku Shoujo - Except the recipients of the lesson end up in hell.
Destroy. Destroy. Destroy. Slowly, completely, gently beyond comparison, cruelly to the point of numbness, I'll violate your life. That's right. The instant I rip off your limbs, tear open your rib and pull out your intestines, biting into your neck as you scream in agony, chewing through your eyes as I ignore your pleas for mercy and spreading your brains on the ground like butter! I am sane, well more or less

Asatte no Houko - good ol' "be careful what you wish for" moral.

Death Note - ditto, albeit with lots of dark twists.
'The world we live in is always in darkness.'
'Yes, and that is why we seek light.'

One is just a little more immediate in most cases ;p But in the end the recipients really deserve it most times, and the ones making the contract know of the consequences so they generally weigh whether or not to make it.

Anyways... while it doesn't exactly fit the bill, there are a few moments in Code Geass where the main char makes some major mistake and then has to live with it and learn from it. He's even told in the first couple eps that there could be some consequences from setting foot on the path he's presented.

Paranoia Agent. Awesome psychological thriller from 2004, the only series the mind-bending genius Satoshi Kon has made to date (he usually does movies). Police investigate a series of incidents where people claim to be attacked by Shounen Bat, a young kid wielding a golden baseball bat.

If you end up liking Paranoia Agent - I also recommend Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers and Millenium Actress. There is always a hidden lesson in Kon's works. But you're going to have to like psychological thrillers to like anything Satoshi Kon makes.
