I use Firefox and the Flashgot plug-in with the FlashGet download manager. With those, you can download the .asx playlist file and the download manager automatically downloads the source .wmv file for you so you can watch it with any media player (e.g., Zoomplayer, Media Player Classic, etc.)

The thing that struck me watching it was the lovely voices, including the characteristic edgy voice of Neya Michiko, and especially my pal Hirano Aya (as Nonomura Ayumi), who seems to be giving us another new voice for her. I liked the humor in the manga, to the extent I understood it, so I am looking forward to this.

Ah! Thanks... I'd forgotten about FlashGet when I moved from Firefox 2.X to 3.X. Yeah, that would have solved my problem.

Will install and take a look as Hyakko is on my to-watch list.

There are plenty of media players out there that can handle Windows Media content. One cross-platform media player is mplayer. You can just copy-paste the MMS URL specified inside ASX files and add the -cache command for smooth playback.

I run the blog that has been linked in an earlier post. I know, it's a bit misleading to say "WMP only" when it's only the Windows Media Video format (*goes to mass replace that statement*). Although DRM is another issue. That usually requires Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. I warn of video under DRM, I also repost them on YouTube. Fortunately, that wasn't the case with this promo.

BTW, FlashGet won't get rid of DRM. It will just capture WMV streams.

From the look of the character designs, it stays relatively close to the manga but with less style.

Funny episode. A significant part is not in the manga, which is good too.

Quick summary of first eps, no screen caps yet

Haven't seen the anime yet but if it sticks closing to the manga which hopefully it will then yes the series will improve. The manga really clicked once the characters were developed/introduced within the first few chapters. Your gonna love that "robot" replacement.

Read the Random Curiosity reviews of ep 1 --- yay, looks like I have a couple of series now that won't be hard to watch.

Ep1 impression:
-The BGM orchestral piece that was first played during Nonomura's first encounter with the blue haired girl is the same piece that one of my local bank (National Bank of New Zealand) use for their ads.
-The sound when she twisted her ankle sounded very painful. As I can attest to as my left ankle was twisted badly once and still 'clicks' when I bend it in a certain way.
-The "assumed" delinquent girl is in the same class as them instead of in a different class in the manga.

The possible Bad End for the jump sequence at the end of manga vol.1

The last panel reads: Hyakko, End, Physically...

Totally bizarre and quite entertaining. These are characters that seem normal at first but then do or say things that are from some other universe. This would be a good thing.

The voices were all very strong, with Neya Michiko (long black hair) and Hirano Aya (high voiced protagonist) both quite extreme. Although I admire both seiyuus, the outlandish voices took a bit of getting used to, for me. I was feeling quite dubious about Aya's take on the role until we got to a passage where that intense, high voice actually brought tears to my eyes. Powerful. Ochiai Yurika (Suzu) didn't say much, but what she said worked. Orikasa Fumiko (Torako) is such a great seiyuu.

The director, Michio Fukuda, is a storyboard specialist doing his first full show as a director, and I really have to give him credit for a good first episode, from camera angles to pacing to the way the initial scene was repeated. And especially for choosing this odd group of seiyuus. Suits the odd manga.

I was a bit taken aback when Midonin wrote that it has been a while since we have heard a Hirano voice that wasn't "Haruhi/Konata/Kaoru-like." For one thing, I don't see Haruhi as sounding like those other two, and for another I have just finished watching 22 episodes of Daughter of Twenty Faces, in which she gave us a voice totally unlike those. I guess it's true that a lot of people didn't watch that show, which I thought was pretty good, and in which I thought Hirano was outstanding (as opposed to Zettai Karen Children, where I didn't like her work that much, at least for the few episodes I watched).

I'm coming to think that Fujiwara Keiji is a voice god. I like just about everything he does.

A promising start. The bizarreness of the humor suits my taste.

I was just writing from the perspective of what I've seen, as I've yet to watch Twenty Faces, and more in the context of recent Hirano roles. The last time I saw her do a voice of a shy character was probably Mahiro in Busou Renkin, so it's good to see a return to that sort of role.

I enjoyed the first ep a lot. There was something special about it.

No idea if it can keep up like this. Kinda curious how this one is going to develop...

I watched the Raw a while ago but I found the anime to be sort... plotless? I may be wrong of course, but I'll still be looking forward to it.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. I was determined to fail this anime because of the sheer volume of new titles I have to potentially follow, but it surprised me in a positive way.

Hoping that they turn up the tempo in episode 02.

Not every anime needs a plot, because some genres are just "stuff that happens to a group of characters". There are right times to look for plot, and there are times when one's not needed. Hyakko seems to be the latter.
