It wasn't just awkward subtitles, VHS quality was atrocious when copied over numerous times. Here's a screen from Kimagure Orange Road.

The text on top is added to explain the subtitles.

I remember a coworker loaning me a VHS tape back in the mid-90s of something... I can't even remember what, now. It wasn't quite THAT bad, but bad enough that I didn't want to watch it.

Well I've recently decided to drop the term fan and just use sub or "independent sub" with the dawning of the era of troll sub groups who aren't neccesarily fans of anything, but I think this is a good a time as any to reminisce about the good old days. It really is a miracle that independent subs are still around and that we can now even get subtitles of certain shows the same day they air in Japan.

Wow, I have them, too. The whole series fits on a single CD (I think the average size is about 20 mb or so per episode), and I remember there was some leftover space, too.

Umm... by exactly what measure are fansubs twenty years old? Because I'm sure oldfags could probably tell you about fansubs that were pre-1988.

You just can't not make a controversial statement, can you?

Time really flies fast... I now remember my drawer full of Cardcaptor Sakura cd's.
At that time I thought I was buying the real thing but later I found out they were bootlegged copies. >_<

As LeviathanDarkly have already said, let's hope for another 20 years of fansubbing groups continuing their work.

Same here. I watched my first VHS fansub thanks to a friend. Can't remember exactly when all this happened, though.

The show was Here's Greenwood.

Saw that show a few years ago at my University anime club. Funny, wholesome, and nostalgic of a simpler time in anime.......does that mean I'm one of those oldfags Sorrow-Kun mentioned?

I remember the time I had to send a VHS tape and wait a long time for it to arrive and when it arrived, the feeling of getting a fansub VHS was phenomenal. I don't even remember what was the first anime I got that way, maybe Urusei Yatsura.

A collective thanks for all fansubbers who put in the work for us leechers..

Earliest fansub I watched is ranma thru gnutella network. Then the irc/edk craze. Then bt.
