Technically speaking, the main problem isn't so much Shamisen as it is Shami-2. Itsuki had a lot of problems finding a cat even remotely similar to Shamisen, and had to settle for a female as a result. What would Itsuko's reasoning be for having to stick with a male calico? Of course, her trying to explain it would be good snarkbait, so it might not be too much of a problem.

The biggest factor in him determining if it's Kyonko, seems to be if he asks about the club. When he doesn't ask that, he gets it wrong.

Orange (or ginger) cats are more commonly male than female, but not to the extent of the female:male calicos.

You want a rarer female? Lentigo are freckles that develop on the nose of ginger or cream cats, and is originally believed to be afflict only male cats; however there are been reports on lentigo on females.
http://www.messybeast.com/gene-anomalies

In conclusion, I think Shamisen(f) could be a freckled ginger cat, as that is probably the rarest female cat in proprtion to males (cosmetically). If it is decided that the CAT fits the criteria of being an character at all, and thus subject to genderbending.

Yeah, freckled ginger sounds good. That sort of thing is exactly the kind of obscure, useless information Kyonko would know, too.

... Would it still be considered the same cat if we changed the "breed" of it?

do you consider Kyon and Kyonko the same person?

I consider them alternate versions of the same character, so in a way I do.

But that isn't really the point I was getting at. With every human character, the most that gets altered are swapping X and Y chromosomes; changing the breed would require far more than that.

I highly doubt that that's all that would get altered to make Haruhi Haruki. There are probably other modifications.

Color pattern does not equal breed. You think there's that big of a difference between a calico and a ginger? One of my cats (tabby) gave birth to a ginger, a calico, and two tuxedo in the same litter. Having Shamisen be a female, freckled ginger is not a breed change, but it does preserve the spirit of the original work.

We're not just swapping around X and Y chromosomes... first off, that would mean we'd end up with YY and YX, which is almost physically impossible, and also the fact that Kyonko looks very little like Kyon.

On a side note, Kyonko beat Fate T. Harlaown in the Korean Super Moe Tournament (by a margin of 1%).

Not what I meant and you know it

*e* Also, Kyonko resembles Kyon about as much as a brother and sister would. *e* (*e2* bah, that didn't come out right... *e2*)

Hence why I used quotes in the post prior to that one.

*e2* The point I was trying to get at is that changing the coloration of the cat is doing more of an alteration to it on the genetic scale than we're doing with anyone else, especially since, given the fact that Shamisen is a male calico, it's a somewhat rare genetic condition that caused it.

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
For a cat to be a tortoiseshell or calico, it must simultaneously express both of the alleles, O and o, which are two versions of the same gene, located at the same locus on the X chromosome. Males normally cannot do this: they can have only one allele, as they have only one X chromosome, consequently virtually all tortoiseshell or calico cats are females. Occasionally a male is born (the rate is approximately 1 in 3,000). These may have Klinefelter's syndrome, carrying an extra X chromosome, and will almost always be sterile or they may be a chimera resulting from the fusion of two differently coloured embryos.

*e3* As I may or may not be able to access the internet in the next few days, I'm just going to drop this particular argument unless it's brought up at a later date. There's no sense continuing a debate if it is literally one-sided, after all.

Kyonko looks more like Haruhi in a way, in my opinion.

I agree, but do others agree? That is the question.
