But compared to '07, this is pretty spartan. Refer to the Roppongi one a few posts up, that's how Orchard looked like in '07, without the snow.

Yes there are. You have to look hard however. I think they're usually MORE than 50,000, but definitely at 75,000, you'll be able to get something...

OUCH. 20,000 minimum in Tokyo and Osaka, 15,000 elsewhere. That's a lot! Might as well go to Korea, since the yen can get a good rate on won right now.

Because in Tokyo and Osaka, it's a lot more expensive, therefore I'd tell what price it will be in the major cities and elsewhere. There's a major difference in one place and another when it comes to price.

Is it me, or am I seeing more non-Japanese [ethnic/citizen] taking up Japanese names? Especially these people:

Chinese/Korean: Take up Japanese name with this form of kanji: S NN [S=surname, N=name]
Russians: SSS NNN

When I ask them, usually it is devrived from their original name.
For example, Chinese use theur Chinese name and submit with Japanese reading.
Russians use similar-sounding kanji, sometimes to hilarous effect.

Speaking of funny transliterations, if you live in the TN KY WV area, you probably know at least one person with a bizzare, but English, last name. I myself knew some Bonecutters, Gaspennys and Pancakes. It came from Hessian or more generally German immigrants who recreated their last names to be more 'English', sometimes with funny results. Just another ingredient in the American melting pot.

To be honest, I would very much prefer my (Chinese) name to be pronounced in Japanese onyomi rather than some bastardised version of its Hanyu pinyin rendering, or even worse, the Cantonese "pinyin" which is unfortunately my English name >_<...

Actually, I prefer onyomi over pinyin for all Chinese names in Japanese. Even when it goes against popular usage... Houkkyou rather than "Pekin", Joukai instead of "Shanhai", Taihoku in place of "Taipei". After all, that's what we do to Japanese names in Chinese (pronounce them in, um, Chinese)!
