Episode 12 of course!
Love lost my music - the bouncy tune suits Haruhi perfectly ^.^ Also love it when Haruhi and Kyon are talking under a tree and Haruhi gets mad and throws a handful of grass at Kyon only to have the wind blow it back in her face - so ditsy ^.^ Can't argue with an appearance of Tsuruya either, and in a maid outfit no less ^.^ |

If Episode 1 is meant to be the same thing as Episode 0 - the Miracle Mikuru video or whatever it was called - then that's definitely my favorite. That's what got me hooked on Haruhi; it was such a ballsy way to start off the series, if you ask me. It could have easily turned a lot of people off of the show, but it was just hilarious.

Ahh...The Day of Saggitarius.
Nothing beats Haruhi kicking a nerdy boy's as--er, head. And Yuki just upped the standards of gaming.

I'm actually going to pick episode 2.
Day of Sagittarius, and Live a Live are pretty much tied for a close 2nd for me, but I've always felt that the quality of a work's (true) beginning and the quality of a work's (true) ending are of particular importance. Episode 2 really made the Haruhi universe come to life for me, particularly due to its art style, animation quality, and overall creative direction. The episode managed to blend the surreal nature of many of its primary characters with a nonetheless very realistic setting and a practical touch-point character in Kyon.
