Lucky star OP music is really successful really.
And I think Lilium -Elfen Lied- will be remembered as a golden anime opening song in the following decades.

It would be nice if you can put all your up-to-date scale and analysis to the front page (If you intend to keep this thread for long) =]

I agree with Doraemon no Uta and Hare Hare Yukai but not sure about the rest (some are quite alien to me).

If you consider FF game series into the list then probably "Suteki Da Ne" and "To Zanarkan Once Again" would be in. I remembered it was so popular back then that even those non-gamer friends have a copy at home as well.

Haha, that reminds me of something: there's a piano in the cafeteria in my school (don't ask me why) that people randomly sit down and play stuff on. A couple weeks ago, some kid sat down and played "To Zanarkand" - very well, I might add.

Anyway, yeah, if we're including video games, we've definitely got to include something by Nobuo Uematsu, whether it's Aeris's theme, "One Winged Angel," or something from Chrono Trigger (which has just amazing music, really fantastic).

I'm mecha anime fandom, especially Super Robot Wars fans, JAM Project has music that rock our very souls.

One such example is 'Gong', which is extremely popularised by Nico Nico as well. Just do a search on youtube and you can find lots of MADs with it. The original song itself in the game, is supposed to be a joint effort of Minmay and Basara, 2 of the greatest singers in the Macross series. It is a hotblooded song that resonates with mecha fans.

I myself loved Ai Oboeteimasuka very much, one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard and it was the first song that made me cry, just as I listened to Minmay sing.

Basara's Try Again at the last episode of Macross 7 made me cry as well, though I'm not sure hot valued that song is.

Gaogaigar's Yuusha Oh Tanjou certainly gets remembered by all who heard it, probably one of the most hotblooded songs ever.

Gurren Lagann's 'Libera Me' From Hell is also an epic favourite for all who watched the show.

Macross Frontier had a whole lot of great songs, my favourite was Seikan Hikou. The trademark 'Kira☆' and the dance itself had quite an impact on the internet.

There are lots of other great scores in Top wo Nerae! 1 and 2, most famous amongst them would be 'Buster Machine March' and 'Top wo Nerae! Fly High'.

Two others I think are pretty significant are

We Are from One Piece
Heart of Sword from Rurouni Kenshin
agree agree agree agree

BUT, i prefer one-half and Sokabasu to Heart Of Sword.

Also, Samurai 7 OP is awesome, when I started seing for the second after a couple of years I was instatly filled with nostalgia from the moment the song started

Ai Oboete Imasuka would probably be the legendary piece I want. And yes, Hare Hare Yukai from TMHS.

I would personally put Butterfly from Digimon Adventure, because that is a very upbeat song with very simple guitar chords, drum rhythm and vocals, plus it is one of the songs I have heard and known for a long time (it is even included in Kumikuyou no Haruhi Suzumiya, just a short instrumental segment).

And of course, who could forget the first opening theme for MS Gundam? That song sounds more like the USSR Anthem than anything else.

The Texnolyze opening "Guardian Angel" was the first Goa/Psychadelic Trance anime opening I've ever seen. Most important fact is, that it was composed by Juno Reactor, a famous Goa/Psychadelic Trance group from UK. Guardian Angel is art, in my opinion. But just have your own taste of it.

Would be great to see more foreign artists of that kind in the anime scene.

I am duty bound to mention that the song people should really hear is the 'Komm Susser Tod' by J.S. Bach. One thing you need to remember is that historical discussion cannot avoid giving bonus points for older, earlier songs.

Suzumiya Haruhi 'Day of Sagittarius' BGM - This is actually part of Shostakovich's 7th Symphony 'Leningrad.' It was first performed amid falling bombs in Leningrad during the German siege of the city. It is of different league in its role in world history.

I need to revise my rating for 'Cruel Angel's Thesis' after I done some harmony and structural analysis of the song. Its text has almost became a meme, but melodically it sounds as if it is plucked from mid 1980s. Harmonica structure is just adequate and theme development has much to be desired. The bottom line is I heard many similar things from music before Cruel Angel's Thesis came out, and it just didn't pass any noticeable musical ideas to songs that followed it. I have to down grade it to B+, yes B+ level for its lack of ingenuity, and the difficulty of finding songs musically inspired by this song.

while the musical form may have been in existence for a while before this song came out, this is a very audacious piece to be used as anime opening song. I can easily imagine the difficulty of any anime songwriters in following or imitating this. Had the series Texhnolyze been a more widely known series, I can easily imagine this song to have a huge impact by now. As of this moment, I will give rating of A- for its historical value. If one or two animes feature OP that reminds people of this song comes out within a year or two, I will raise the rating to A+. If this innovative approach is not copied by anime series with decent number of viewers within 3 years, I have to down grade it to B as something that should have been more widely known, but failed to hold on.

Juno Reactor is used in the soundtrack for Genius Party Beyond, for Koji Morimoto's piece:
(just hit play and it'll start at his spot at 2:40)

He also did the OST for Brave Story, but it's listed under Ben Watkins instead .. because it sounds nothing like Juno Reactor

now for a classic that caught my ears personally the first time I heard back on VHS and have remembered it since was the Dirty Pair OVA OP:

dunno if it has any real significance but it's one of my all time favorites

Boy, does that Dirty Pair OP brings back memories. It is a fine song that I have hummed sometimes in the past, but there exist a severe flaw: large part of the song is a patch work of famous 1980s pop songs, starting with Michael Jackson's Thriller. Although they do not use enough of a song to be sued for plagiarism, still the fact that most of the motives can be directly connected to pre-existing song prevents me from assigning B+: I have to knock it down a whole notch to C+. Copying of famous songs has been used even in the 70s, and just because it is a song I liked cannot justify me from assigning higher grade. Although of lesser musical quality, Dirty Pair's TV OP and ED may actually have been more influential, as it used some bold musical ideas for its time.

I'd rate the Lucky Star OP as SSS personally.. it's the only one I'm aware of that has spawned tons of audio and video remixes, official and fan made:

It may get there, if we see more and more anime and other entertainment venue copy visual and musical ideas from it. Right now, I still say Hare Hare Yukai has wider recognition. Also, Lucky Star OP parody proliferation received some jump start by 'infrastructure' laid out by Hare Hare Yukai. Bottom line is that I need to see and hear bit more before raising the level for Lucky Star.

I cannot see how people say that Hare Hare Yukai or the Lucky Star OP have had influence or any importance in Anime History when they are not even a decade old though. You know, when considering what history actually means and all.

Those two have already made visible imprints in how Anime openings and Ending is made, both visually and musically. Furthermore, it has started some new commercial model for the songs, namely where all the characters in the series performs different versions of Hare Hare Yukai, which has not been widely known prior to this. Lastly, thanks to Youtube, these songs have penetrated into Global popular media, making itself known through reputable news source like National Public Radio, again something that hasn't happened before. I already seen many Korean popular songs and accompanying dance, by its timing, mucial style, and dance format, which suggests of borrowing ideas from Hare Hare or Lucky Star. These songs already acomplished a lot, and passage of time will likely to add, instead of subtracting from its legacy. Another thing is think how we can say Obama being elected to be president of USA is historic even though he hasn't sworn in, yet.

Well, thru the generations, there are songs that dictated the style of the season.
Like how Cruel Angel's Thesis marked the mid-90's.
Then we had the Gundam SEED themes for the early 00's.
Later we had the Kyoani themes dictating every year.
Like Hare Hare Yukai and Bouken Desho Desho in '06.
And Motekke! Sailor Fuku in '07, along with COLORS [Code Geass].
Finally Gundam 00's themes in '08.
