Wink Cable Vs Dsl

OK! I need everyones opinion on this? I'm probably, posting on the section also? but I'm sure a kind mod will direct this thread to the right forum.

To the question: I'm having a difficult time trying to decide whether to get cable or dsl? I could probably get something similar to a T1 but......... do I really need that? You all know the faster the better. OK! hope to see your opinions!

Cable, its about the same price as DSL but much faster. T1 is for college or companies and up, thats a high price, doubt you and get it or afford it. The high cost of T* lines just don't justify it for home use. You need the cabling, etc etc etc.....and if you not networking many PCs, now theres no point in T1 or higher. DSL does nicely, but CABLE IMO is much better.

Cable all the way...nothing beats d/ling at speeds over 100kbs ^_^

always connected...from the second you turn on the comp, never have to dial up, phone line doesn't get tied up...ah, so many advantages...

and if i remember correctly...cable is faster then T1

I've been using DSL for a few years. Cable's not available in my area.

Generally, the best thing to do is to ask your neighbors about their service. Just because I get good DSL service here doesn't mean you'll get good service there, see what I'm saying?

With cable, your speeds decline the more people log on. That's why it's important to ask your neighbors about their experience. If they're telling you that around dinner time, they get 56k speeds, then that's something good to know, right?

With DSL, the bandwidth is "reserved" for you. However, DSL is generally more expensive. I'm paying $90 a month for a 1.5/768 line. Some ISPs are offering 3Mbps DSL, so you can't really say cable is faster, but it's 5x more expensive than an equivalent cable line.

Anywho, good luck!

yea, I'm using ADSL, I like it, I have a line thats sepose to go up to 3Mbps down and 680kbps up, but I think there's a problem with the download line or something since uploads are fine, but when it comes to down = not too great, anyways..... ask other ppl in your neighborhood since like Nothing Special said, its diffrent from area to area, also what sucks about DSL is that the further you are from a "hub" less better speeds that you will get

Yes, the distance between the hub and you makes a huge difference with DSL. When they first set it up for me they actually made a mistake and hooked us up to the wrong "hub" so our speed was rather pathetic. All they did was hook us up to the correct hub which is about 2 houses down and now it's fairly decent.

1.5mbit dl / 512 kbit ul for about 30 bucks canadian.

Here in the Neths, we got soo many providers.
Which are also tested in down/up speed, connection and pings >.>

For Cable and SDSL, there are 2 here the best for me.
Both for 80 bucks a month for the max/plus/super subscription.

Cable: 3Mbit down, 384 Kbit up, fair use policy.
SDSL: 2~8 MBit down, 1Mbit up, fair use policy.

(the minimum subscription down/up 512/256 Kbit/s costs about 20 bucks a month)

In Belgium, there are like only 2 providers and not so good either.
I have cable there >.>...
Up and download limit; Download: 17.5 GB a month, up: 2.5 GB a month...
Also same price and about 3 Mbit down and 128 Kbit up.

I think you need to check what's available and what they provide

go for DSL...i have cable and it's very easy to use, unlike DSL which can cause problems. i remember the first time i had DSL here, caused all kinda probs with the phone line. also, couldn't use the phone while using the net cause there would be static heard on the phone line. this is easily fixable using a filter though. i like DSL cause you have a "private" line, so to speak, you don't have to share bandwith with others. call me selfish, but i don't wanna share. my cable is a "shared" pipeline, so at night-time it slows down quite a bit.

I think I must be the only person on my cable line taking cable internet-- my speed never drops below the rated speed (never below 786kbs when I had that, and never below 2mbs not that the system has upgraded).

Hmm not entirely sure what the best section would be, but as
this thread isn't directly BitTorrent related I've moved it to General Chat.

As for my opinion on the matter: I think the important part would
be speed and not the technology (ADSL or Cable). Also for convinience
I'd get something where you get a ethernet modem with dhcp
(and no PPPoE) as that would be easy to connect to pretty much
everything, including PC/Mac/XBox/PS2 and broadband routers.
USB modems and/or PPPoE don't make this half as easy...

WAAAHHH!!! THe great GHDpro-sama has spoken!...

*crumbles on his knees and begins worshipping*

but as to the topic of discussion at hand, based on personal experience, Cable is the way the go but it really depends on the area. some prefer cable and some prefer DSL. Cammie seemed to have already made up her mind though so...

*continues worshipping GDHpro*

Ok, Cable is 2x faster than dsl on the average.
However, cable internet by itself (if you dont have cable tv) costs 55-60 bucks a month.

you can get dsl for 30 bucks a month, and for some companies, thats a fixed rate and not a special.

But i say, i would pay the extra 30 bucks a month to get 300kbps+ with cable than with the 150kbps+ with dsl

I've had some experience with a couple of DSL modems(from Siemens & Intracom) and both used PPPoE to perform the connection.
The best thing they had was the fact that they had both a USB port and an ethernet port as a PC-Modem interface.

The only problems so far were only caused by the fact that parts of the network(phone lines) are quite old.

Both modems had a dhcp option(disable, dhcp server, routing data to an external dhcp).
