Apologies for giving the wrong impression. The chinese subs were out thus I was able to really savour this episode fully.

Something I just thought of:

Aren't they all in their second year of high school? There's still one more year, right? Noto was talking about how he's planning to go into the Arts major and becoming a freelance writer (If I remembered correctly) and Haruta was saying to Ryuuji that he should go into the Sciences since his grades have been excellent.

If there's one more year before university, why the rush on Yasuko's end to start taking on more jobs so that she can see Ryuuji through the end? Even Yuri-sensei was advising Ryuuji on the possibility of taking up scholarships or applying for financial aid.

Maybe someone can shed some light on this.

This really differs from the "devil may care" attitude that I see from the third-year Konata I see in Lucky Star.

i really dont know, but i think that's just Yasuko personality... her life hasn't been easy, so i think that she is thinking that they are on their own. Ryuuji naturally wants to work and never thought in scholarships or financial aid... he never thought in going to college.

And Konata is pure win... trivial things like college has no meaning to her

Right, she doesn't want Ryuuji to have to go through what's she's gone through without the college 'experience' (which is a bit overrated *except* for the education and exposure to different fields/people etc.) She may be childish but she is still a mom.

It just felt too sudden for me.

Maybe there's a small time gap between the day they had the dinner conversation, and the day Yasuko left early to take on more work, but from the viewer's point of view (i.e. me), it seems like it all happened within a day and that's not very convincing.

Also, everyone did the form-filling a year ago and Ryuuji's (if I didn't see it wrongly) was to proceed further to university. So, shouldn't Ryuuji and Yasuko be foreseeing expenses and whatsoever from that point?

Since I knew roughly how this leads to what happened later, it seemed like a rather weak plot device to move things forward. Oh well.

Haha, alright. Now I see.

I rewatched that part and it looks like the one Ryuji submitted at the beginning of the 2nd year showed that he choose work. So maybe a conversation about going to college didn't come up until now.

My understanding was that expenses are going to start right now. University exams are hard in Japan and that means cram school. And cram school means fees. Oh, and total lack of free time.

BTW - isn't that the same questionnaire Yuri-sensei bugged Ryuji about in Ep.1? The one he was going to fill when Taiga ambushed him? Nice continuity nod.

Ryuuji's house has almost no savings. Expenses may be needed although Ryuuji's results are the levels which can obtain a scholarship. And Ryuuji thinks that he wants to ease Yasuko's burden early.
Yasuko does not have a clear prospect economically about Ryuuji's going to a university. However, Yasuko desires Ryuuji's going to a university.
Ryuuji has extended the opportunity to discuss with Yasuko. Because, Ryuuji has not been completely antagonistic to Yasuko until now. He would extend confrontation until now. However, confrontation is already inescapable.
