Speaking of causal loops, at the end of Book 4 Kyon cannot stop Yuki from changing the world; he is supposed to let her change it first, then change it back.
Since the first attempt from the past failed, there is a second attempt from the future that succeeds. 2 causal loops and 3 Kyons from 18th December.

Future Kyon returns to the future,
Stabbed Kyon wakes up in a hospital on the 21st
The Kyon sleeping at home either a) wakes up in an alternate dimension, or b) he vanishes while walking down the stairs at school.

a) Means all 3 Kyons are simply different positions on the same world line; and even though the world is restored, Yuki still created an alternate dimension just for Kyon to maintain the loop. It also means there was a Kyon clone interacting with the normal SOS-dan on the 18th. Or maybe a Yuki->Kyon Marionette.

b) Means that there is a alternate Kyon somewhere out there...

And also the funny idea that Yuki threw a comatose Kyon down the stairs.

Kyon woke up in an altered, but not alternate, timeline. He then went back in time because that was where the escape hatch led. In the past, he met Mikuru (Big) and Yuki, and spoke to Yuki about the incident. Yuki couldn't stop it from happening, so she made sure there would be the escape hatch that her future self could not destroy and would send Kyon back in time to her. Kyon and Mikuru (Big) then went forward in time and made it so that Yuki would change the world back, where Kyon was stabbed.

However, it took Kyon almost three days to fix things, so Yuki didn't change the world back immediately. She got to live out a few days in the altered timeline knowing that Kyon would break it and she'd have to go back to the ways things were.

When the three days were up, Yuki changed the world back to almost the way it was, with everyone but Kyon having fake memories of the past few days. He never fell down the stairs; that was just a cover story.

Then, Kyon eventually persuaded Mikuru (Little) to take him back in time to help out his past self. Where did Kyon wait out the three days between being stabbed and waking up in the hospital? Mikuru (Big) took him the short route.

See, now everything ties up neatly. One timeline, just altered twice.

Yes. It also means that she had a few days of acting in the manner she desired as a regular human, all while knowing that it would have to end soon. Yuki staying in the past though, would have led to there being two Yukis, which would lead to the same problems as otai's speculations. I can't think of any reason for her to have stayed there.

If we can accept Yuki being the type who would do something like that. Anyway, Haruhi has a high level of scifi shenanigans, and Tanigawa would most likely would leave things uncleared just to keep fans guessing.

Still, I find it hilarious to think that Yuki has a bunch of Kyon-bots to cater to her whims, and used one to keep the masquerade until she had the chance to toss the stabbed Kyon down the stairs.
