Less than a year. The first game that introduced the Konami Code was the port of Gradius for the Famicom (NES).

And according to what I've found here:

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/グラディウス_(ゲーム)

[FC]1986年4月25日

25 April 1986

So it was pretty brand new at that time.

I have noticed that the fukuin name Shannon and her real name Sayo have the same initial kanji. If we speculate that the same thing is done for any fukuin name, how many male japanese names can have that particular kanji in "Kanon"?

I wonder if anyone tried to figure it out already. After a brief research i found out that there was a japanese actor named Kato Yoshi source and the Kanji of the name is the same as the one in Kanon.

So maybe Kanon's real name is Yoshi? Any other possibility?

EDIT: found another one, even more probable:

I searched for names with the intial kanji you pointed out and stumbled across "Kayo" [嘉よ] , but it kinda seems unlikely since they aren't related since birth. Japanese name dictionary (ENAMDICT, huh) found 1473 matches with this kanji, but I'm not really sure which are family names. And even if you cut them off, there are still maaaaaaany names left. But good job on spotting that his real name could include the intial kanji.

Kayo is a feminine name. However the number of names found by that dictionary is really disheartening, I thought the number of possible names could be narrowed down to a very few, but I guess I was mistaken @_@

Certainly I wish that dictionary wasn't that confusing, I've seen some repetitions and even something like "Kase Station". WTF? I guess it doesn't include only proper names.

There is also a wide number of names that have same pronounce but different kanji, so the actual number in romaji would be smaller, but there seem to be like a hundred of them at the very least.

It bothers me the fact that Shannon's name has been said since the beginning but Kanon's was kept secret. Does Kanon's real name bear a particular significance?

Considering Kanon's personality and the several missed occasions here and there, it looks rather like a problem of circumstances for this revelation, instead of a real attempt to keep its significance for later.

Actually, Kanon revealing his name could be the definite step for him to be "fully human".

I think the same. Because the whole "I don't want to say my name"-issue always came (about two times only :P) with the furniture-complex

Well... this is probably the wrong thread to discuss this, but there is a point when Kanon's name was just one small step away from being revealed, and it was with a very incredibly good timing that an event prevented that.

No!
let's blame
Spoiler:

Yeah the timing was just to good to be true, but I think Ryukishi wants to wait a little bit more before Kanon is finally "Human" and announces his name

Well let's hope his name will be revealed sometime. I'm fine with it if Ryuukishi won't keep it secret forever, but I think it will be used as character development device just like Klashikari said.

Actually if Kanon was Shannon then he... she should have said his name was Sayo.. shock!!!

But that mean the Kanji theory si false.

What if Kanon is not Shannon but he's a girl? Then he obviously couldn't say his.... her name! XD
