I personally don't like a show with all guys, but I dislike a show with all girls even more. Joking about Yaoi scenes never gets old, on top of having GAR as one thing more to keep me interested for the former, since I never find anything GAR about females so it doesn't apply for the latter. In both cases however, nothing to ship for drops my interest like a rock, so I never enjoy shows like those apart from special exceptions.

As for mixed, too many anime feels like a harem if its slanted towards a female heavy cast, while an anti-harem if the other way around. So overall, I like shows where they give an effort to have an almost even split for the guys and girls. I mean, a straight (pardon the pun) 50/50 split is needed to maximize the number of possible het ships, no? XD

Sadly, most animes are usually mixed.

I don't care about the casting type as long as the story is interesting. I like seeing a gender mixed cast no matter how the ratio between the genders is equal or not.

Mixed, but I will admit I prefer a slight female edge in overall numbers. Tari Tari and Kokoro Connect's 3:2 ratio (favoring females) is pretty much perfect, imo (both within the main cast and within the full cast).

Also, the more yuri a show has, the less I care about the presence (or lack thereof) of male characters.

All female, or girls with a single male (and another male sidekick for comedy)
Anything else is normally instantly disqualified, especially all male. Yuck.

Answered option 3, Mixed. (Yes, I'm aware this is a thread from 3 years ago.)

I'd prefer mixed, but if there were equal numbers of males and females (in a straight romance story), so much better. Just so multiple pairings where nobody gets left out in the end become possible. Instead of all the attraction being focused on just one character. Or all the attention on just one pairing. I'd really like to see more romance stories (like ef) with multiple couples for a change.

So yeah, Mixed all the way for me.

Aria: all girls and I'm cool

Fist of the North Star: no women allowed and I'm cool

I guess a little (straight) romantic tension is always welcome, so mixed is cool too. However, I don't like if it is a battle show and the show tries to artificially make it gender balanced. It's just too easy to see through and tends to make for all sorts of irksome gender equality speeches and otherwise needless interruptions to the action.

You know, I said "Mixed" before, but I'm not so sure any more.

I've noticed recently that mixed-gender ensemble casts often shortchange the male characters, whereas with all-male or with all-female you tend to have more even character development.

Just compare K-On! to Tari Tari. I really like both shows, but K-On's five member main cast each receive roughly equal amounts of character development, whereas the same can't be said of Tari Tari's five member main cast...

Are mixed ensemble casts really worth it if it means the male members in the cast get shortchanged development-wise? Is it better to have 5 well-developed female characters or 3 well-developed female characters and 2 half-developed male characters? I'm not sure that there's an easy answer to these questions.

It's a hard question for me to answer really. When it comes to a mix of both, from what i've experienced, the male characters are always the bad guys, and I don't really like that they always get bossed around, shunned, insulted etc etc :S At the the same time, there are nice moments that both male and female have which make an anime quite enjoyable to watch, such as a confession scene or something similar.

However, having a full cast of just male or female can be just as good. I absolutely loved Danshi Koukousei No Nichijou and it's main male cast. K-On was just as good. I don't know how different those animes would have been with main male/female characters.

Really depends on the type of show.

I prefer slice of life type with all or mostly girls.

Romance should have 50/50.

Action should have a single action girl main heroine or all dudes.

That makes sense.

Romance/Slice of life - one male as a buddy is good. The rest are girls.

Action/Mecha - all my enemies are females... and they'll fall for me one by one... in battle and in love....

Tragedy - my death would make all the girls became nuns... lolss!! They can't get over me!!!

In general it's still an harem.. hahaha

Like a mix of both. If all characters are equally developed; that makes a good cast. Too many shows put so much focus on the girls and the guys get sidelined. But also depends on the show as well.
