I guess my problem with the whole idea that "the faux-WW2 pretense is a purposeful show" is that... it seems awfully pointless and a huge waste of energy to go down that path to keep everyone "entertained". It just seems rather clumsy and inefficient (although admittedly I'd be hard-pressed to explain why exactly) Wouldn't it be easier to use actual entertainment (and not the repetitive nature of war, which leads to desensitizing) and retain the threat of invasion/war to manipulate the population when you really need to?

And it just seems to downplay the role of actual people when it comes to life and their government (even between two major superpowers and when advanced technology is presumably available - perhaps not to the public in those two countries, but I would think the nature of technology is that it eventually trickles/leaks out to the public, at least in other countries)

Of course, I have hardly ever studied the habits of societies and political control through history, and I'm probably just blinkered by my experience of the modern world as it's turned out so this might actually be very plausible, but to me it didn't feel that way. Yet (at least via the visuals) I got this impression that they were attempting some form of realism, which resulted in a sort of dissonance I suppose. Might as well have used some utterly made-up country, why not?

But well, in the long run I'd rather just enjoy it as it is. I'm still convinced it could be much shorter, though. I don't see why it had to be made into an animated feature-length film, disregarding the theory that it was a self-deprecating criticism against the anime industry. A pointless criticism considered it's been made so get over it, but I'm just not convinced the medium was really made use of that well.

I doubt I'd ever put it among my favourites, is all. I think I enjoyed it more than the person who asked me to watch it, though

I just watched the movie and I have to say everybody missed the plot of the story, you are wrong if you think the synopsis is a spoiler.

Spoiler for Sky Crawlers plot:

Just saw the movie thought it was pretty good a bit slow but still watchable. The airplane scenes were pretty well done. The character designs irk me at first but I started to like them a bit as the movie went on.

If you watch this movie literally you can't understand , you have to look below the surface.
Btw i did'n't really enjoy this movie, i think this theme was not worth an anime, maybe a live movie but not an anime.

the Sky Crawlers

Well my post got moved. And all my questions were answered.

Not going to lie...wish I didn't buy this on blu-ray lol

Although it was epic. I was expecting more of a Sci-Fi with some epic battles...

I saw this advertised in the latest issue of Shojo Beat magazine today & thought to myself;

"Man I totally hope that this gets a Region 2 DVD release soon!"

Else I'll cry as it looks really good!

Indeed, that was the main focus in the movie, according to what the director, Mamoru Oshii, said in the press conferences during the movie promo campaign. He kept on insisting the main theme was this question: what is a teenager facing while stepping into the world of the adults, what is he afraid of, what are the hardships. So, yes, the movie was intended and turned out in the end as a growing up story, and not simply an action movie with a war background.

I saw it, thought it was a great 30 mninutes story stretched over an hour and a half.

It also falls in the pitfall of thinking that obtuse = deep.

Kusanagi and Mitsuya seeing as how the clones don't always look alike what are the chances that Mitsuya might be a Kusanagi clone.

Even though they are both Kildren, there's not much to suggest that Mitsuya is related to Kusanagi. Of course, there isn't anything to indicate that they aren't, either. So, it's up to you. I, for one, would prefer not to assume more than the evidence allows.

KimmyChan wa kawaii! But I like you better as Nyuu-chan than Lucy-san!

You seem like one of the few with the attention span to appreciate the show. If you'd like to see it, PM me.

Whoever did this mash-up is a genius.

Battle of England is one of my favorite old school war movies. But the feel from "The Sky Crawlers" on this makes it better here.
