Valkyria Chronicles - Spoilers & Speculation

Well the thing is that Faldio is meant to have a tank. And said tank driver is meant to be Ramal.

So how they're going to integrate the fact that he's a) assigned elsewhere and b) meant to be driving a different tank is beyond me.

If that's the case I actually think it's even more likely. I can definitely see him asking for re-assignment and I don't really see Faldio/Welkin/Varrot refusing. Not to mention it's about time for Faldio to be taking his "personal leave" so that'd leave him free anyway.

If nothing else, the anime has already done other things that don't make sense for the sake of character development (inviting low ranking soldiers and their pig to the princess' ball for example).

I really really hope I am wrong though.

Ok, spoilering that way it's not the best move to do, but it is quite clear from the beginning that Alicia is a Valkyrie (at least in the game, it is hinted more than once) so it's not that dramatic.

There's plenty of unexpected plot events coming up really soon, and rather than on the fact of Alicia being a Valkyrie the story (at least in the game) focuses on how she feels about being a Valkyrie and also on the use she makes of her newly found powers (and no, she doesn't start to act as a super sayan, the story is not that cheap.)

In the game, Selvaria and Alicia never fought each other as Valkyrur. Given how different the anime is, I was just wondering if they would put this in.

Well, I don't consider that a fight, where one side is clearly high on "drugs" and have no idea what she was doing. Last I checked in MGS 4, the two men were actively smart-talking each other.

I don't think that the company doing this really has the skills to do it justice though... so we probably won't. At best we'll just get some trench warfare, which is a lot easier to animate, as you just need to have people popping up to shoot every now and again while shells rain down.

So I'm finally caught up with the show again, and I gotta say I'm starting to feel a little anxiety about what's coming up.

Spoiler for game stuff that will be happening:

If they follow the game progression, the next mission will be Marberry Shore. That would mean 3-4 episodes until one of the major characters bites the dust.

Next episode is a character episode about Rosie's past, and probably after that will be another filler episode (Squad 7's R&R I'm looking at you O,O) before heading to Marberry. They'll probably take two episodes on that one I'd guess. Then again, I'm starting to feel like they're going to throw the beach episode into a DVD special or something. Maybe they'll just get right into Marberry shore after the thing with Rosie then.

As for the OP spoiler, I don't think it's such a big deal. I'm sure most people had suspected as such for a while now. What I'm more worried about is how much the played up Selvaria vs Alicia, since that happens all of once in the game. That's not to say it wasn't awesome (it was) but they're making it out to be this big central conflict, which it isn't. At least not from a combat standpoint.

I can definitely see them turning it into something more prominent in the anime. They're already focusing more on individual character interactions than large-scale battles and a climactic showdown between the female lead and the female antagonist (who also seems to be the most popular character) would fit perfectly with that.

Besides, they suck at animating war scenes but seem to be decent at the whole "Valkyrian Lance Z" thing if the OP is anything to go by, so they'll likely play to their strengths.

So I have a fairly big question to ask given the current course of the anime. Now that we can see that the animators are going for broke with the stupid Faldio x Alicia subplot it begs the question:

Will Faldio be able to shoot Alicia and trigger her transformation into a Valkyria given the change in their portrayed relationship?

From what I can tell from the game, there were three main reasons as to why Faldio was able to shoot Alicia:

1) He barely knew her. The most he knew of Alicia was that she was "my best friend Welkin's girl". Aside from that they barely interacted, primarily because Squad 7 was sent on missions by itself for the most part.

In the anime he can't stop trying to get into Alicia's pants and sticks to her like glue. He has a massive emotional attachment by now.

2) He was an extreme patriot who believed that his way was the only way to save the country. This wasn't built up before the actual shooting, but more demonstrated afterwards. Only after Max is beaten without the power of the Valkyrur does he finally obtain the view he was completely wrong.

Nothing so far has indicated he feels this way about Gallia in the anime.

3) He spent huge amounts of time studying the ruins in order to be absolutely sure in what he was doing. Heck, he even took a leave of abscense from the Militia in order to study the ruins and steal the Valkyria weaponry from an exhibition.

Nothing so far in the anime has indicated he's put that much thought into this.

So really, since he has a massive emotional attachment to Alicia, hasn't demonstrated any extreme patriotic tendencies, and the Barious ruins are destroyed so he can't study them to be absolutely certain in his decision... how can Faldio possibly bring himself to shoot Alicia? He would have to become utterly inhuman over the next few episodes to be able to do so, and since he seems to be a favourite of the writers, the odds of that happening are close to zero.

So what will happen then? Will Alicia's abilities emerge for some other reason, like Isara's death? Will it be Damon instead that shoots her for insubordination? How the heck will she get her lance and shield unless Faldio schemes and plots in order to get them?

I'm certainly enjoying the anime for the train-wreck potential is all I can say.

I can still see it happening. Him giving the order to attack despite the civilians in episode 14 shows he's adamant on completing the mission even at a big cost. Then again, in 12, he was yelling at Welkin not to shoot and stop the kidnapper because Alicia was held hostage, so who knows.

Barious was destroyed, but I think instead they will have that fragment Faldio gave to Alicia start reacting to her in some way and that will convince him of her origins instead.
