Are there any examples of energy-converting armor's effectiveness? Given how often variable fighters get shot down, it doesn't seem very effective.

Absolutely. In the very first episode of SDF Macross, we can see that Hikaru crash-lands a VF-1 through multiple buildings. It suffers a bit of damage, gets a few minor repairs, and can fly high into the stratosphere and perform complex aeronautical maneuvers without a hitch. Albeit that this is an example of overall durability than necessarily the ability to avoid penetration, it's a trick that a modern main battle tank would be hard pressed to pull off.

The thing about how often variable fighters get shot down is that this is not a matter of how strong the fighter's armor is, is a matter of how the fighter's armor compares to the weapons fired at it. Since we can gather a rough idea about the armor strength from the crash, we can then apply that to meaning that the weapons fired at variable fighters is correspondingly powerful. If a unit were to be hit without the armor protection, then it would suffer even more catastrophic damage, and the pilot would be killed. Also note that, in most early VFs, the energy-converting armor only worked in battroid form.

Really? Then how can the pinpoint barrier stop the attacks? magnetic field? Light-pressure? Plasma wall? dense particle mantle? What's that?
Luckily it seems like it's confirmed that the Energy-converting armor is an advanced electric/charged armor(like the phase shift armor in Gundam SEED)

Since we can see the actual forcefield, it's fairly obvious that it's an energy shield of some sort, and since we know that the pinpoint barrier is based off of the fold principles, we can make a few basic assumptions about it. However, why do you think this is important? What the heck difference does it make if it's a light-pressure defense (which doesn't make any sense) or a plasma wall (which also doesn't make any sense), or an electromagnetic field, or some sort of exotic energy field? Isn't it vastly more important to know what it does, and what it's limitations are?

Yes, but if you know it's a wall/field of plasma you can imagine it's dangers at malfunctioning too for example.
So. What it does? Physically stops/destroys the projectiles/beams? Like a beam shield?

We've already seen all that - both with regards to failure and how it interacts with physical matter (especially with punching into ships) - why would you need someone to tell you what you can already confirm for yourself?

Besides, stuff like calling it a field of plasma would make no sense whatsoever - all it really accomplishes is in making the designers look foolish.

We know a full shield overloading on the SDF-1 can wipe out an entire city if I remember correctly. However was that all the energy they were absorbing being reflected all at once, or was that a power grid overload more or less coverting matter in the surrounding area to energy? They did it twice that I recall. Once when they tried it the first time (they didn't mean for that to happen), and the second time on purpose.

That overload only happened the one time; they fixed the pinpoint barrier system after that, and I can't recall it happening in any subsequent Macross show. While the explosion was huge, it wasn't anywhere big enough to have converted matter to energy. A single kilogram of matter converted to energy would generate 9E16 J, or 21 megatons, any practical amount of matter conversion (the ground being the closest source of matter to SDF-1) would have to involve hundreds of tons, and so the energy output would have been in the hundreds of gigatons or several teraton range. The explosion that engulfed that city in Canada wasn't anywhere near that kind of size - it should have been in the hundreds of megatons to several gigaton range (it's possible that it's a bit more than that). This is a figure that's fairly consistent with the amount of firepower being poured onto Macross, so it should be just as the crew described it - an overload of the shield system.

The explosion that took out most of Zentradi fleet should mostly be caused by secondary explosions from the destruction of Boldolze's mothership, so the pinpoint barrier doesn't have much of a role to play here (except to protect Macross, of course ).

Oh, and I forgot to address these points earlier:

After all, while humanity have achieved in building colonies 1/3 the size of the moon, they are still facing enemies who can construct battle-stations the size of a friggin planet.
Actually, I was speaking of the Factory Satellite when I was referring to pinnacles of engineering. As far as I can tell, humans haven't built anything to that kind of scale yet. Still, the sheer number and size of ships they have built is extremely impressive given that they had to build the infrastructure for it almost from scratch; and they accomplished it in just a few decades.

Battle Galaxy

Measurements

* Length, overall: 1,681 m (warship mode, including antennas)
* Height, overall: 1,186 m (Storm-attack mode)
* Width, overall
o Warship mode: 521 m
o Attack mode: 747 m
* Displacement, gross: 16,550,000 t

Battle 7
Battle 7 Carrier Mode 1,510 meters; Battle 7 Attack Mode 1,177 meters

SDF-1 Macross (refit)/SDFN-04 Global
Dimensions: length(height attacker mode) 1,200 meters, width 496, height 312 meters; (approximate dimensions following 2012 refit) length 1,200 meters, width 600 meters.
Mass: standard operating displacement 18,000,000 metric tons; standard operating displacement (following 2012 refit) 22,000,000 metric tons.

With the Towers the Macross class is still taller. Battle 7 and Battle Galaxy doesn't have much a difference in height. Presumably Battle Frontier is also 1,86 meters in height. Just that Battle Galaxy and Battle Frontier have longer Deck arms.

Spoiler for Battle Galaxy and Battle Frontier:

I think it's the main cannon placed at the back that makes SDF-1 taller. If we disregard those, how tall would SDF-1 be from head to foot?

Spoiler for Macross sizes:

Approximately this. For Battle Galaxy it is taller a bit by 9 mters. But I think that is negligeble considering the bulk appears to be at the Deck.

Spoiler for Battle Galaxy, Battle 7, Battle 13 carrier modes:

Spoiler for Battle 7 and Battle 5 comparison:

Since Battle 5 and Battle 7 are of the earlier Battle class generation they are around similar proportions. While Battle Frontier and Battle Galaxy are the next generation of Battle class in similar proportions as well.

So going by the numbers Battle Frontier and Battle Galaxy are longer in length by 171 meters, wider in width by 151 meters (Deck), and taller in attack mode by 9 meters.

Major Update - The Zentradi Invasion!

Today a Zentradi-themed update to the Macross Mecha Manual is complete and features 27 new profiles. The focus of this latest update is new Zentradi artwork as well as new Macross Chronicle trivia and numerous other corrections/revisions.

A concerted effort was made in this update to improve the VF-25 Messiah profiles in the Macross Frontier section. The inclusion of revised color art, additional black and white line art, color code transformation guides and fighter schematics should elevate the VF-25 Messiah profiles to a level that equals the comprehensive format of the other hero Valkyries featured on the Macross Mecha Manual.

As the many temporary Zentradi-themed banners and buttons would indicate, this update also features a major overhaul of many Zentradi vehicles and mecha. The special theme will draw attention to the newly colored Zentradi mecha and hopefully the improved art helps maintain the uniqueness of the Macross Mecha Manual. The many Zentradi-style graphics on the website will be featured for only a short while after which the Macross Mecha Manual will revert to its traditional appearance. Enjoy!

Complete Revision of the "Icons of Mecha" profiles, now moved to a dedicated page titled More Mecha. All profiles have been revised, the Patlabor, Nausicaä and Cowboy Bebop colored art have all been improved and new profiles have been added for The Five Star Stories and Mobile Suit Gundam.

Revised all text-based pages (Updates, FAQ, Books, etc) with new HTML tables that format all paragraphs to no more than 1,000 pixels in width. While this new code does increase vertical scrolling it should make reading the website much easier, especially for those users operating with the new high definition standard (1,920 x 1,200) wide screen monitors.

Not sure what your talking about. but what ever it is, it's meh

its thermonuclear, hence Fusion. plus its Protoculture, hence we don't really know much about it, so no point going into detail over it.

Well you see, armour in the Macross Universe is a funny thing, it is not only determined by the thickness, but also by the "power" it consumes.

Valkyrie chest plate armour from the Vf-1 era is equivalent to that of a traditional main Battle Tank.

The armour by it self is light, and is only activated when in battlroid form.

Light enough that it can FLOAT in sea water when it's turned off, as seen in Macross Zero.

Like Main Battle Tanks, the armour is designed to SURVIVE from a hit of at leased 120mm round. No one is delusional to think that the armour is PROOF against modern Armour piercing rounds.

Your assuming they are using circular 1990-2008 weapon technology, hence you think they are similar to APC.

I assume they are using 2059 circular weaponry and i think they would shrug off APC like paper.

Hence Valkyrie armour is INCREDIBLY tough, by our standard, but is the best they can do against advance weaponry of the future.

Dunno what you are saying, but even before the SDF came about, all protoculture ships were, as seen. SHIP form.

It was only by chance that the module fabrication of the ship, that made it possible that they could change form.

After Space War I they went back to conventional thinking.

why do you think we had NO OTHER transformable ship except the the original, New Macross and now Macross Quarter?

All others were ship form.

But obviously, having no transformable robot, then this series would be just another space opera without a name.

There are reasons why there is transformable ships, and it's a valid one. either nostalgia by humans who were saved from extinction from a vaguely humanoid form ship, to transformable planes design to fight GIANTS.

sure it's writers, but that is part of the Macross history. it's nothing "moronic" then having Gundams all over the place, that doesn't have any logical explanation as to why they have big robots.

I mean...why? do they have to fight against Giant Aliens too?

If you watched Macross 7, you will know that the New Macross class takes the "modular" approach and add one better.

When in ship form the Guncannon is for all practicality, a "module" part of the ship.

The only difference is that it has it's own separate system in terms of mobility and power. The guncannon actually feeds power off the main ship, this makes absolute practical macross sense. After all you are talking about a culture of paranoid with survivability. The mentality of redundancy is hammered into every fabric of life.

After all, you never know when a race of giants might drop by to wipe you off the face of your home planet, as unlikely as this might seem.

but that's the thing, you have to "blast" your way though the hull of your ship, you have aim and damage the very ship, your putting all your eggs in one basket.

I'm not saying the enemy won't be doing that, but separating the main anti-ship weapon from the main ship, means the enemy must divert it's attack to TWO targets.

halving the enemy strength, the enemy will have to make a choice, destroy the guncannon? or the Ship controlling it? first? and if you survive the first assault will you have enough forces to attack the secondary one?

But if you concentrate your attack purely on the guncannon, risking irreplaceable forces to get past the firing ship, they will have a dilemma whether this will effectively disable these two threats?

It make sense in this context that the controlling ship will be heavily defend against anti-ship/fighter attacks and the enemy won't really know if there is another MASS anti-Ship weapon on the ship holding the guncannon?

Of course im talking of an enemy who has not encountered a battle flagship of a fleet before, but so far in the Macross universe, unless your facing enemies who are familiar with humans, all this counters in the battle of survival and tactics.

no spares? you have proof? they might have one hanging around, you don't know.

What you mean too big? The guncannon is about the same size as a medium frigate, the same ships you see around as escorts.

If they didn't, did you know the factory ships of the fleet are capable of building new frigates for the escort ships?

If they can build new ships of this size, what makes you think they cannon service or build a new gun cannon?

Seen the size of the city ships? the Island ships?

It's not impossible.

In the dangerous Macross universe with the power of the protoculture technology, don't underestimate the ability of factory units that are able to manufacture ships and equipment on a GIANT Scale.

Plus, if you don't have the resources, just call up a neighbouring fleet or colony planet and ask them to FOLD out a spare guncannon, i mean what are friends for if they can't spare you a guncannon ship or two?

Well, when your in a battle of survival, even soldiers will find there highly precise and manufactured ranged weapons a surprisingly good club.

like wise, if a Battloid flagship is involved in a battle that it finds itself in a desperate situation that NO ONE CAN IMAGINE (INVASION BY GIANTS???!!?! NNEEEVVEEEERR!!!)

Then swing around a guncannon the size of a spaceship doesn't sound far fetch,

oh, if you want an INSANE mental image, imagine it throwing a guncannon at the enemy, or even more funny, using it to hit asteroids.

BATTER UUUUP!

...or pitching them.

the macross cannon of the battle frontier and the others(battle galaxy, battle 7, etc)has a protruding part that i believe is a part used similarly as a bayonet(anyone agree?).

By the comparartive standards of a real modern-world bayonet, the "protruding part" on the Battle Frontier, Galaxy... etc. is too short to be of any effective use and should be treated as nothing more than artistic expression.

From what the series has shown, Macross in Battaloid usually find more use by just sucker-punches its target...
