Still ... the fact that they are talking about how they are dead while they sit around drinking tea should tip people off. Unless they are watching the raws and don't know Japanese ....

Back up for a second. Where does it say that they're in purgatory? It looks more like Maria and them were just having detective stories ALL ALONG with the made-up Ushiromiya family case as their chessboard. Battler came up as exaggerating to me over their little detective game. Unless you're a VN reader, there's no way for a first time viewer (who doesn't even know whether Beatrice exists for a fact or not or how the scenario is SUPPOSED to play out) to naturally say 'oh they are now in purgatory, they're all dead now, that's Beatrice sanctuary that's why she appeared, the scenario is only set to happen between October 4th and 5th. And yes of course WITCHES EXIST. That's why Rika Furude witch is there and Beatrice and her are BFF. This is all expected.'

WTF? That is why I'm bloody confused right now.

They really should have put up a setting card stating they were in Purgatorio, but come on. The epitaph does say that everyone will be resurrected in the Golden Land.

When you play the VN, even though you're told this takes place in Purgatorio, it's still very confusing and WTF. It isn't until Beatrice shows and the magic of resurrection is reversed that you begin to understand what is going on.

I would just say to new viewers that you should not take everything you see so literally. So we see Beatrice? Does that mean she really exists? This story is more abstract and bizarre than that. You can't trust anything you see.

Okay, I'll try to make things simpler for anime-only watchers: no one, not even VN players, really knows what is going on. This is Ryuukishi's style of writing. Over the next 20 or so episodes in the series, you've got to try and figure out what has happened. Trust me, things will get more clear, but they'll get more confusing before they do.

Episode 5 is the start of the real series. Don't expect to understand everything before the end.

...Plus, VN players don't even know what Purgatorio actually means in this sense, so not including the name doesn't really limit your information much.

And BTW she's not Rika Furude ^^; She's Bernkastel. Speculations about her being the same Bernkastel of Higurashi (which most anime viewers have seen without knowing who she was) abund, however there are many hints that she is.

Anime-only viewers should really read the ending scroll, if not anything else, from the TIPS section (available from another thread)

Probably the most important (?) thing they left out so far.

Yep it does. If they said that they're in pulgatory, then I'll atleast figure out that they're in the golden land and they got resurrected there like the epitaph predicted. It would've made more sense to me anime-viewer. Even if in the afterlife, Shannon and Kanon are still servants and serve spiritual cupcakes and teas lmao I still would've gone WTF at the appearance of Rika Furude though.

I think so! But if the village of gold is really the afterlife. That'd be painstakingly lame.

I still feel that way!

hahah yea yea I know she's not that loli Rika Furude but calling her that sits more well with me since she's got Higurashi written all over her.

Where is this ending scroll? Did you mean the epitaph of the twilight?

That's exactly my point. We don't know that they are in the afterlife. This is Ryuukishi we're talking about here. If anything, the whole Purgatorio sign was more likely to be a false clue.
Spoiler for game related info:

We don't know anything about it for sure, and we probably won't find the true answers until the answer arcs.

But I digress. That's a discussion for the other thread.
With a rifle that close to your face, it wouldn't have just been one small hole in her head. Instead, her whole head would've been split in half with a rifle that strong.

In other words -> It couldn't have been a suicide, unless it was pistol or something of less caliber.

I tend to think of Pugatorio/the Meta World as a more concrete version of the world of kakera from Higurashi. It's a sort of waiting room where possible fates can be viewed. It's a collection of consciousnesses.

I sure hope the answer arcs will have ANSWERS. Ryuukishi might not even know the answers himself because he thinks it's better that way or some excuse like that hahah

Considering how Umineko was scripted, he had (and proved) to have prepared everything so far (the headlines) otherwise, he is good to shoot his own foot more than once.

You can have all different interpretations of what that is. The novel actually uses the italian word "purgatorio" most probably a reference to the Divine Comedy, since it's exactly at the top of the purgatory that Dante meets Beatrice the first time.

chronotrig is right when he says we don't really have a clue what this "other world" actually is, however in the anime you don't even understand that it is "another world".

What was the name of the BGM playing at around 17:30, when Beatrice was like -> What about all these events? How do you explain them? And what about the fate of these 5 people?

Anyone have a youtube link that doesn't have any spoilers?
