Also I am reminded of why I temporarily stopped watching in season one. Haruhi is a bitch who gets everything she wants. I'm also starting to dislike Kyon a little more. He should grow some balls already. (actually this goes for everyone else in the brigade too)
Or kiss her if that's what the OTP people are saying. But I'd rather have the first option.
That was exactly my thoughts too, though I could still finish and appreciate the first season. But I really, really hoped for some HARD comeuppance on Haruhi too.

I still hope

In reality, Kyon shouldn't have been able to dodge that attack - not if Ryoko was putting everything into it. The fact he did meant that either Ryoko was simply playing with him at first (a distinct possibility), or that it's a SMvFL moment. Either way, it's not really a bad ass moment for me.

Aiming his gun at Haruhi's prism... yeah, that's pretty bad ass. At least for him.
Ryoko probably wanted the whole thing to look natural, and if she had stabbed him at warp speed the coroner's office probably would have noticed. Her intention was to freak Haruhi out by killing off the only person she seemed attached to, not by tipping her off that there was a whole other world hiding just behind the surface of her reality.

But that's not interesting! A murder mystery has to have some unusual quality to it. Otherwise it's just Psycho A killing Victim B!

It wasn't the mystery that was important. But the victim. For Ryouko it doesn't matter if she be caught after. She wanted to see Haruhi's reaction to Kyon's death. Otherwise, she could just have killed anyone else.

I don't know if she being faster then she should be would be any difference, though. She probably had enough control over her body to stop stabing he just at the point it is physically possible.

Bah, you have no artistic flair. Just killing Kyon would result in a sudden spike of activity, but it'd go away after a while. A supernatural mystery would keep Haruhi actively searching for whatever caused the problem until it was solved.

That 'sudden spike of activity' is all that Ryoko really wanted.

And then what? If they don't get what they need, there was no point to killing Kyon.

... And now I'm picturing Asakura singing The Emo Song... thanks for that.

'The what' is exactly what she wants to know right? She just wanted something to happen, anything. What come latter she thinks latter.

Is because of that I am actually very sympathetic for Ryouko. She clearly didn't have much developed emotions, like Yuki at the begining. But she was alive and was really frustrated. I wonder how she would become if she decided to wait a little more. It is a pitty she is dead, it would be cool see her again. Her, no a dimencional conter part... (like the Yuki(chan)verse one)

You heard her. She just wanted anything to happen, because nothing was happening.

Does Haruhi really seem like the type to agonize over something for long periods of time? The way she handled that case with the president of the computer club makes me think she'd get over the why if she couldn't readily figure it out.

It always did seem like a waste of a character. Sure, she's an the Uncanny Valley Girl, but that doesn't mean she absolutely had to be killed off after being upgraded from supporting cast.

That's quite a bit different. Haruhi has little to no connection to the CCP, you can't really say the same thing about Kyon, even back in Melancholy. Also, the CCP just disappeared, Kyon would be dead in this scenario. Try comparing it more to the LIS "murder" mystery, only with the added fact that it's someone close to her.

Anyway, Asakura isn't in this episode, so why are we talking about her?

Totally agree. Ashakura, Achakura and Yuky(chan)verse!Asakura are not enough because they miss what makes Ryouko interesting in the first place. Btw, I believe this trope was created fer her, and then people start to add exemples.

True. Then, how about Kyon's and Haruhi's name being displaced on the credit? Anyone have a Guess about what it means? Also, what was the symbolism in Haruhi's name be geting alway from the rest of the Brigades on the Endless Eight?

I'm looking at the victim and the mystery as two separate motivators for Haruhi. I thought the whole point was that they were two separate things. Mixing them together doesn't really do it for me. Involving Kyon is obviously gonna get her interested, but that doesn't mean she'll care forever and ever and ever . . .

As for the island murder, a closed circle mystery is a little different than a high school murder. There's only so many suspects with one, while the other would be a little overwhelming for a high schooler to try and solve when dealing against a data manipulating specialist.

If Kyon was suddenly murdered, there might be no need to worry about how long Haruhi's reaction would last, because she would very likely destroy and or recreate the world/universe. That in itself would probably give Asakura enough data to sate her appetite for a while.

Well i think Haruhi's great the way she is. Her personality and her character development are her charms and are what make her my favourite character of all time .

Just realise that my POV in Haruhi is always quite similar to Itsuki's

If it goes away, She just needs to be "stimulated" again. Asakura isn't interested in studying Haruhi forever; she wants to see hight level magic acts that can be studied, and the more extreme the better. Much of Haruhi's divine actions are actually within the capability of the Data Overmind, so they couldn't learn new things quickly if she just do parlor tricks like making flowers bloom in the wrong season overnight.

"Aha! So this is where Haruhi Suzumiya keeps her saved games universe backup states. Fascinating.

Next time on the Ryoko Asakura Hour let's find out what happens if Kyon were to be attacked by bear cavalry!"

I pretty much agree.

I just finished writing a blog entry on just this topic (while also looking at this episode just a little bit).

It's called "Playing Haruhi's Advocate".

Here it is, if anybody wants a read:
